THE NATIO AL PAPERS It's a new year, it's a new race season , it's time to crank up the '82 title chase bo th here and abroad . Let's go. Winston cigarettes has upped th e Pro Series point fu nd money to $150 ,000. If a rider can lead it at th e halfway mark and then at the end he ca n take $35,000 from the total fu nd . Several times in the past th e rid er that is leading midway is not the rid er who is high point a t the end of th e season. It is uncanny how many times th e bonus at the halfway mark is d ecided by a single point. Good news from Winston for the Formula One National road racers . $15 ,000 in final season point fund money will go to the road racers that finish in the top five point spots, On the su bject of W inston money that has been paid out over the past eight years: The total now stands at $750,000, of which Jay Springsteen and Gary Scott have taken a combined total of $190 ,000. SCOtt is the only rider to pick up a Winston check every time during the eight seasons. The club up in Washington wants to bring back the Castle Rock race track . They have been digging it out from under the volcano ash and mud for two years and will get going with a non -National biggie next summer to the tune of about $10 ,000. Look for a National to return there in '83. Also loo k for Canadian Yvon DuHamel to return to road racing in '82 here in the States. Yvon , well past 40 , got back into the swing of things in '81 up in Canada and cannot resist just one more time at Daytona, etc. You remember DuHamel? He would crash when on his way to the win many tim es in the '70s, or if he rod e a steady pa ce he would have th e bik e b reak. Age a nd re ti rement may gi ve him th e righ t form u la this time , b u t can a ny rider in his age bracket rea lly come back? Ed d ie Lawson , Superbiker and dirt tracker deluxe , finally gets his chance in Formula One National class road racing with an all new Kawasa ki 500c c two-stroke. Lawson and di rt tracker Wayne Ra iney team up for Kawasa ki to form th e " Mea n Green Team" Su pe rb ike effort. Word is tha t the slick fast 250cc Kawasaki 250 is no m ore. Hats off to the AMA - they have fin all y combined the Lightweight Exper t and Novice classes into one, which debuts a t Daytona . There are reall y no No vice 250 riders a nyway. A long over d ue decision that will reall y boost th is even ly m a tched class . Also in th e "No More" category is th e Trophy Race held at all N at ion al dirt track even ts. Inst ead , t he AMA now has a "last cha nce " event th at will find the winner only moving int o th e National final. The Trophy Ra ce h as a lwa ys been a consolation event with no poi n ts and no transfer , but it did pa y all t he ride rs that rode in it. It appears th ere was another move to again try a nd put the Juniors ba ck into the National dirt track event s. But it was turned down. Promoters ca n still host a Junior In vita tiona l, which is perhaps th e best way to go . A good Junior is still aJunior for onl y on e season. A good J unior also gets a cha nce to ride in at least one Invitational , if he wa nts to . Yamaha , th e offici a l spo nsor of the twin Nationals a t Houston for so m an y years . is not the sponsor in '82. W or d is that Honda jumped in and took it as soo n as it be came avail ab le. Harley-Davidson is not goi ng to sponso r th e d irt track series in Florida this yea r b ut the di rt series, with poi nt fund money, will continue to lure dozens of vet eran Expe rts to tune in their new equipmen t and hu ndreds of Junior and Novice rid ers int o skipping school so they ca n sta rt or cont inue their climb to fam e. Tammy Kirk becomes only th e sec ond girl to ever enter th e N at ional events at Houston in Februa ry a nd th e dirt series in March in Florida . Dorothy Rowe, the onl y other woman who was close to becoming an Expert , ha s re o tired after several years in th e Junior class . She would have been a Junior again in '82 had she continued . Randy Mamola is a confirmed ent ry for the Da ytona 200 aboard a Suzuki 500. Randy made onl y one appearance in the states in '81 and won at Laguna Seca . The la st tim e he raced Daytona he came close to winning both the 100-mile 250cc even t a nd the 200 -miler with both efforts on Yamaha. Now if Honda and Nava Helmets will get together and bring world champ Marco Lucchinelli to Da ytona for the first time it will really pump some new life in to th e annual biggie. Dale Singleton retired his pig , "Elmer Ill" for the same reasons the ohter two were put in the pen. Too big and too fat . Let's hope that "Elmer IV" can keep his diapers on and behave himself on stage at th e Hawaiian Inn at Daytona better th an his older brothers , wh o went o n to be com e pork roasts and b ac on strip s. All th ree have been in Da ytona 's fa m ed Victory Lane so Elmer IV has his work cut out for him - or he gets cut ou t. Word is out tha t somebody is plan ning a "roast" at Dayto na for either Da le or Elmer , or ma ybe bot h. A look a t Hou ston th e next time around . Roxy Rockwood 3
