Stick Bobby Davidson was third overall at the MRAN Camel Chase, first 250cc. Smith smokes D·38 Mine Shaft Scrambles By Loretta Pipkin BURRO BEND. CA . DEC. 13 High flying Marty Smith put on a good show, winning the Fudpucker Racing Team's Mine Shaft Scrambles, a 100 mile race divided into four loops . 20 Smith, aboard a 250cc Suzuki cruised in with a three minute lead on the first lap. Paul Eddy, who was in the top five, went onto the second loop with a rea r flat while his pit crew stood by with the replacement . " Pa pa Bill" Reams was booking it, tryi ng to overcome Mont e Lee and stay a head of points riva l Claude Maynard . Smith nee ded his health y lead as he ca me into ho m e check off the secon d loop . Three cross grain whoop -de-does put him high in th e air to the delight of the crowd until he got to th e third one, where he and th e bike parted company. "I was in t he air and I could see myself com ing down wrong," said Sm ith. " It wasn't bad just tweaked .the bars a little and the bike started right up." Smith was in the pits and gone before. second place Dale Conner cleared home check. Conner, a D-37 rider as is Monte Lee , was having a good day. He finished second overall and first in the 250cc Amateur class . Monte Lee was third overall and first Vet, riding in over 500 desert races since sta rting in 1963 . Ed Foland again led the 125cc parade with Terry Str au wald second and Ra ndy Byers first 125cc Novice at ninth overall. In the Senior Division Jack Neeley got it on past Roger Adsit , the undisputed terror of the Senior set. Overall winner Smith finished four minutes ahead of the next bike . Asked if he would be riding more desert races this season he said his plans for the next year were n,ot finalized yet and he didn't know at this point although he really enjoyed' the desert races. M ick Collins (KTM); 3. Bob Huff (Yaml. Lizard Chase at the edge of downtown Glamis. Foland, aboard a I2 5cc Yamaha equipped with a paddle tire, got the holeshot on the pack at the start. Just before the first check he endoed and Craig Corda picked up the lead. The race was five times around a I2 -m ile course that kept you on your toes . Several riders ran paddle tires on the rear . "T hey were definitely an advantage," sa id Foland, " they ga ve my 125 a 250 punch in the soft sand ." Corda kept t he lead four la ps with Foland on his fender . Paul Eddy was dieing it with Da le Ste venso n and J ustin Bra d y. At the end of three la ps Corda led Foland by a minute with Ed dy third as Brad y pulled past Stevenson into fourth slot. Down Oldsmobile Slide Ed Mundy collided with Gorden Clark. Mundy went on to finish but Clark , body and bike covered in sand, packed it in for the day . On the final loop three miles from th e finish , Corda's air cleaner was gasping for air , and the weird sound heard was Foland's paddle singing as he flew by. Eddy h ung in there for third and Stevenson slid past Brad y for fourth. When Foland crossed the finish line the checkered flag wasn 't up and he took another lap before anyone could stop him . He figured it shortly and cruised in with pretty wife Pam who finished in the Novice class . Roger Adsit again took the gold in the Senior class and . yes fans , big Rog had a paddle. Brand,Stearns take D·37 Toys for Tots GP By Shirley Upp BARSTOW , CA , DEC . 5-6 Barstow was the place to be for riders Scott Haislip . Lori Fa rmer , Gary Charters , Paul Palmer, John Borders, Rodney Brand , Bill Saltzman and Chuck Stearns. All these riders were the winners of th eir classes thi s weekend in wha t turned out to be two days of great racing at th e Desert Rats Toys for Tots GP. The Sportsman class along with side hacks and Odysseys , started the Saturday races. Scott Haislip (Yam) jumped in the lead a t the start and held it throughout the race. Guy Mews (H on), Tommy Thompson (Yam) and Lynn McGraw (H on) were d ieing it out for th e first lap and thes e three came throug h home chec k withi n seconds of ea ch other. Rid ing ste ady a nd hard, Barstow ride r Haislip took first overall with an easy lead. Second was another Barstow rider, Tommy Thompson (Ya m) . Third plac e hono r went to Lynn McGraw (Hon). First side hack was the team of Bob Ne ill and Jerry Huegle. The Woman 's ra ce was th e second ra ce of the day. Lori Farmer was a n, other r acer who took the lea d and held it from sta rt to fin ish. Jol en e Payne was second after the first lap an d Debbie Hopkins was third and first C bike. Wendy McGraw was first Beginner and first Amateur was Laurie Hammel. First Novic e was Patrice Payne, riding her first ra ce after a year and a half away from racing because of a bad spill and badly broken leg. Farmer, one super racer , stayed in for the win even with a flat tire she got on the second lap. Second was Hopkins and third overall, first C bike Novice was Jeanette Lang. Fourth was Jolene Payne. First Amateur was Hammel. First 250cc Novice was Patrice Payne. First Beginner was McGraw. The third race of the day was the Seniors and one of the most competitive classes in the desert. AI Guzman jumped in for th e lea d a t the start with Dick Burley running second. Third and . waiting for the opportunity to take the lea d was Ga ry Charters. Ch a rt ers, after ta king the lea d on the first lap , held it and ca me in for the overall win and first C bike. Second was Al Guzman and third was Allan Torkko . Fou rt h overall was Ron Bebo and with this race Ron tied u p th e number one 250cc plate for next year. Fifth overall was Lee Elias . Second C bike was Willie Eveland and third C bike was Bob Tartter; these two riders ca me across the finish simu ltaneouslyl Ron Hetherington , leading his class throughout the race, took first Open Amateur. First C bike Amateur was steady riding Mel Teney. Firs t 250cc Novice was Greg Lod as. First 250cc Begin ner was A. Kna ak. T he last race of the day was the C bike class , 0·200cc. Pau l Palmer (Ya m) took the lead and his lap time was the fastest of the day . Four and a half seconds behind Pa lme r was Bill Mattox who never let up a nd kep t within striking distance of Palmer. Palmer kept his throttle tu rn ed on throughout the race and as th e sun went down he took the checkered. Mattox finis hed second. Third was Tom Elias. First C Ama teur and fourth overall was Oren Beck II . Fifth and first Trail bike was Bobb y Cha rters. Sixth was Bill Postel. Firs t Novice was Jeff H ill . First Begin ner was Frank Willging and taking first Min i honors was J oh n Borders. T he 250cc race was the first of the day Sunda y. Ted Hunnicut was the lead ride r heading out on th e first lap. Ken Upp was running secon d and getting ready to pass Hunnicu t when he go t a back fla t. As Up p sta rt ed slowing dow n , motocross ride r Rodney Brand went by with J eff Kaplan closing ranks fast . Mike Sixberry was with the front runners. Brand, making his second desert race a good one , had the lead and without any trouble with other riders took an easy win . Actually it wasn 't an easy win as Rodney did have his problems: his chain came off, he had no back brake. his tire went flat . his exhaust pipe broke and most of his fork oil ended up on his legsl Sixbery took a
