Thanks again to the fine work of the promoters, racing action in all of the heats was spectacular. With several of the state's fastest riders in every heat, you can be assured that each transfer spot was well earned. Several of the semis had lineups you might see in a main event. Being called "mini mains," the semis produced such close racing, it was obvious the mains would be some of the best all season. Doing a super job in his healS, Bill Walsh was the first man out for the Handicap main. Johnnie Zweygardt (Denver Used M/C Parts/Sbokempo Martial Arts) was the next man out on the 20-yard line. Also lining up on the 20 was Jim Troudt. Dave Pieper (Buckram Contractors) was joined on the !l0yard line by Brian Hoel (Wyscarver Signs) on Bill Wyscarver's Jawa. Completing the lineup was Ken Pieper (Buckram Contractors/Colo. Concept Hair Designl,F1ash M/C) on his recently purchased four-valve Jawa. With Walsh gelling his expected holeshot, there was an intense battle for second and third place. As the rid· ers spread out slightly, Troudt began to put the pressure on Walsh. By the third lap, both Ken Pieper and Hoel had golien by Zweygardt. On the fourth lap. a real war had begun to develop between Hoel and Ken Pieper. Pieper would go in wide trying to get a drive while Hoel would stuff it in under him. This jamming went on for almost the entire race. Meanwhile, Troudt slipped by Walsh on the last lap. The battle for third continued with Pieper in front at the finish. AIter the best heat racing all season, the stage was set for an exciting Scratch main. Lining up in the number one slot on the inside was Scott Ormiston (E.E.O. Co.) on Fred Martin's Jawa.. Next to him was Christ Reichardt (Assoc. Automotive Ind./Brownell Dist./ Corey's Wheels) on Gene Plue's Godden. In the number three slot was Hoel ith Ken Pieper on the outside. Getting the best start when the gate went up, Reichardt had a nice holeshOl. Only one problem, he went into the comer so hard he got too far sidceways. When this happened, Ormiston ran right into Reichardt's rear wheel, causing them both to fall in a spectacular crash. After the bikes and bodies were separated, both Reichardt and Ormiston returned to the line for the restart. When the tapes went up, this time Pieper got the holeshot with 'a very questionable "roll shol." He was followed by Hoel and Ormiston with Reichardt trying the outside. On the second lap, Reichardt got a super drive coming out of turn two and motored by Hoel to take over third place. Pieper had managed to put a litde distance on second place Ormiston by the third lap. Also on the third lap, Riechardt had closed the gap between himself and Ormiston. On the last lap, Reichardt got a better drive in turn two and slipped by Ormiston for second place. . In the King of the Hill match race, it was challenger Brian Hoel against Mike Golightly (Brownell Dist.) on the Yamaha West Jawa. When the gate went up, it was Golightly with the holeshot from the inside. Because of a gate malfunction, the race was restarted. Again, Golightly got the holeshot with Hoel right on his tail. Golightly con· tinued to lead with Hoel trying every possible line to get the lead. On the last lap, Hoel lost traction and fell coming out of turn two. Golightly went on to win the race besides--setting a new two lap record. The old record was held by Ken Pieper, it was a very fast 21.0!l. Golightly's new record is 20.75. This also makes the second week in a row that Golightly has won the King of the Hill match race. Any of you out of state riders reo member, the race on December 18 is the Winter Season Championships, so if you are looking for a place to ride, this will be your last chance until March of '82.
