Don't be surprised if none of the Big Four field a factory team in the '82 Trans-USA series. Kawasaki didn't in '81, and Honda, Suzulti and Yamaha have sent letters to the AMA stating that they won't be there either, according to Yamaha's racing team manager Ken Clark. The reason? "It's too long of a season," said Clark. Pointing to the schedule that begins at the end of January and ends in November, Clark said, "No other professional spon has a season that long. Can you imagine a pro football team beginning letJgUe play in January and going to November? There'd be nobody left standing! We've been teUing 'em (the AMA) for two years, 'Please do something to compress the season..., According to Carroll Chandler, the AMA's Pro MX Manager. the AMA has sent letters to the manufacturers asking them to contest the series in '82, then sit down and look at changes that could be implemented in '85. "It·s not fair to the promoters (for the manufacturers to puD out in '82)," said Chandler because the promoters have to file for sanction dates well in advance and the FIM sanction - required in order to put on a Trans-USA race - costs many. nonrefundable dollan. Chandler stated that the promoters are "gung 00" on the idea of holding races anyway, perhaps paying for the factory stan to ride as weD as ~ting more European entries which have been lacking in recent years.
