In reference to the Phantom Duck and the B to V trail ride, the California Desert District BLM public affairs officer, DeLoris "Pete" Palmer was quoted in a Los Angeles paper as saying, "We're tired of being used. We took them to court twice trying to stop it, and we lost." Califomia Desert District Manager Gerald Hillier was quoted in the same ~~cle. "Right now, if they stay on ex,stmg roads and trails, we have reached an understanding. And it is possible some time in the future a race might be run on this route." We haven:t won the war yet, but we have a very efficient fighting team. that ~ll continue on as long as we have nder support. Don't back down or give up any of your rights, and we will be meeting on the trail again next year. Husky thanks Our f~ns, dealers and employees are very ex.ated over our good showing in the B.aJa 1000. Th~ results emphasizes our mvolvernent m supporting the ~ of desert: racing and motorcycling m general. In addition to Husqvarna's support to this effort there is a certain special group of people that without their help, our victory would not be possible. These are the support crews that manned the pits and kept the entire effort running smoothly. These fellows helped Husqvama entirely on their own spare time and at their own expense. Husqvama would like to! publicly extend a special thariks for a job well done. The fol.lowing names are pit captains that are m charge of each pit. With these captains were additional people that worked with them. Unfortunately we cannot name them all. Special thanks to: Kevin Peterson, K~ Hearing, Jim Halmerson, Boyd Miller, Harry Falkenthal, John Barnes, Randy Hollenbeck, Lynn Davidson, ~b Ashcraft, Fred Miller, LeRoy Miller,. Jery DeBerry, Tom Clardy, Ray Ribs, Ray Abbott, Don Lester Dick ~hares, Tim Barlow, Tom Brynt: Jon Stillman, Lee Bowman, Ray Hilton and Bill Halbert. Other thanks to 0"; tuner Niles ~ssery for an excellent job on preparation of Husqvarna entries. ROBERT POPIEL Off-Road Manager San Diego, CA Happy birthday Happy birthday Rocky Williamsl Love, DMW. Happy birthday to you from all of us at Wheelsmithl WHEELSMITH ENGINEERING Fountain Valley, CA Racer par excellence ON THE FRONT PAGE: We are proud to present a four· color reproduction of David B. Mattingly's poster Flyl", HI,It. However. we'll' leave the interpretation up to you. For more info on the poster, please sea p. 73. 4 This letter is to commend the continuous achievements of Wheelsmith Maico rider Alan Olson. Alan and I used to dice it out in the CMC Intermediate ranks. Well, old age finally took its toll on my career, but Alan kept going with the determination of a lad half his age. At the end of each year Alan would always say how he'd have to start racing less and spending more time with his lovely wife and children. Yet this year Alan was out almost every Saturday and Sunday, racing two classes. Not just a local rider, Alan raced the entire Golden State Series and emerged as the Vet class champion. He and his illustrious brother, "Movin' Marv," made the long trek to Washington and to Mammoth, where Alan again prov,ed to be unbeatable. And now there is his latest victory in the AMA State Championship. He can whip all Intermediates on his 490, or the Vet Experts on his RM125. He'.s one of the nicest guys I ever met racmg. I just want to wish him the best of luck and continued success in 1982 even if he's "cuttin' down on his in: volvement." (When do those '82 Maicos come in, AI?) And thanks for all the help. ZAPATA ESPINOZA Hollywood, CA Neither rain nor snow ... Neither wind, rain, snow, mud nor the BL,M co~ld ~ampen the spirit of determmed dirt bilters who made it all the way from Barstow to Vegas on the Satur~y after Thanksgiving 198 I. I WISh to express congratulations to those who continued on as Mother Nature's weather combined t<>gelher with the B to V trail to provide a double challenge to both ability and stamina. I would lilte to hear from everyone who made it to Vegas in the dirt, so thai I can congratulate you personally. Drop me a line. ~he gr~up I r~e wtih experienced a high. ratio of fimshers that included out of state guests from New York Virginia and Alaska as well as the tw~ ladies who started with us. Thanks gang. Sticking together on the trail and having desert wise support troops pays off. Thank you Cycle News for everything you have done to help preserve a place to ride in the future, and thanks to the road riders who braved the weather to participate in the Cycle News Road Ride and Poker Run. Your support of the AMA and Phantom Duck Legal Defense Funds will be used to benefit all riders. Rescue , would like to thank all the fine folks of District '7 who have contributed to Rescue' this past year. Without your support we would not be able to be out there to give a hand when needed. A special thanks to Crown Toyota of Upland for their sponsorship of Unit '17. Without their support it would not be out each week to pick up downed riders. HARRY CANTRALL Rescue' Support appreciated We would like to thank all of our supporters and pit crews who participated in our effort in the 1981 SCORE International racing season. A special thanks goes to George Erl -: Up-Tite Husqvarna - Dick Pharis. Bill Mailman, Ted Vanden Raadt Hayward Mendenhall and all of t~ Hilltoppers M.C. for a job very well done. STEVE BELL/DENBY DAILEY Lakewood, CA/Bellflower. CA 1981 SCORE Class '0 #1 Off·Road/GP racer's rejoicing It finally happened! Something good. for us off-road racers and GP specialists (considering the past few years of BLM and environmentalists' 1 Ith·hour shaft jobs). We're finally getting a decent chance at real, honest·to-goOdness moneyl I:'RO (Professional Racing Organization) has been formed and is offering 70% payback and two·and-a-haHhour GP-type races for us. SRA and AMA District '7 are supposed to be sportsman racing, and CRC, CMC, AME, etc. all have good points but are geared to the ..- .... motocrossers. The road rashers have their orgs doing them well and SCORE is great. but a expensive to particip~te tn a few times a year. Even hill climbers get a chance to pick up some green. . . I'm glad to see another organization hit the ,SCene and hope lilte hell the sponsors, factories, shops, accessory people and especially my fellow competitors support this new program. Wouldn't it be bitchin' to see the red, green or orange machine people put up a $500 contingency per class 10 see them beat the yellow machine people or the Scandinavian machines? KEVIN E.
