TEN YEARS AGO They called it a "Cycle Circus," and it featured jumpen like Super Joe Einhom. Bob Gill and Dave Aldana. That's right, Aldana. He was subbing for injured jumper Steve DroIte, and performed Droste's show of jumping seven can and landing without a ramp. On Aldana's second jump, everything was going fine until the gas tanlt split a seam and the bike turned into an inferno. As usual, Aldana jumped off unscathed. Einhorn made a successful ramp-to-ramp jump of 14 can. Ilon Schneiden wrote an article on the cost of racing. Among the costs involved, according to the article, were a racing motorcycle ($550), leathen ($60), boots ($40), shin guards ($16), silencer ($10), AMA card ($7), District card ($:5), entry fee ($:5), gloves ($6), chest protector ($1:5), elbow pads ($10), shoulder pads ($14), helmet ($50), goggles ($5) and eN stickie (free). The stickie is still free, by the way. Dunlap was the site of the final round of the California State Trials Championship, and Ilich Bledsoe won the event. However Lane Leavitt', runner-up finish was good enough to give him the title by a scant two points over Bledsoe. The Sandblasten M.C. held a D-:57 hare scrambles at Red Mountain, with J.N. Iloberu taking the win on his 400 Husky. Open class riden Ilich Thorwaldson (Suz) and Mike Pattick (Yam) placed 2-:5, trailed by Jeff Wright on a 175 Puch. Ilick Hocking topped Al Kenyon in the Open Expert class of a rough scrambles at Hayward, CA. In all Evans took five class championships, more than 150 wins during the year, and $6000 in Kawasaki bonus money. Maico-mounted Terry Wood won the Open class title in the South Pacific Motocross Championship in Hawaii. Stan Sonida (Cl) won the 250cc class_ Southwest Motocross Park in Lockhart, TX, was the scene of a fiercely fought duel in the 125cc Expert class. In the end, California's Gary Bailey (BuI) took the overall win, but not without a stiff fight from Austin's Steve Stackable (Yam). San Antonio rider Kent Howerton (Yam) worked his way through the pack for third. Eve! Knievel ran a two-page ad proclaiming his upcoming Snake River Canyon jump.
