Brandt. Brandt's lead never changed
as he crossed the finisb first. He also
made a clean sweep of the evening by
winning the Money Mini race.
Steve Delay took the lead of the
200cc class and held George Hopper
off as long as possible. George made
his move in a left-hand comer and

win at wet Eugene
MX
By Clay Light
EUGENE, OR, DEC. 6
Motocross racing went right DD
schedule at Territorial R~ceway
in Eugene despite heavy rains
which caused severe flooding in
the Williamette Valley and coastal
areas. Eugene had a devastating seven
inches of rain overnight, and only the
dedicated MX enthusiasts were on
hand. Wayne Church (Valley Cycle
Yam) won tbe 125cc Pro class, and
Steve Williams (Herb's/Yam support)
went uncontested in the 250cc Pro
class. The weatber was more suited for
-ducks and pigs as lakes formed around
the track which, luckily, is on a hillside
and has excellent drainage.
In 125/25Occ Pro race number one,
Williams (Yam 250) led tbe pack over
Richard Earle (Cycle Country Hon 125)
and Wayne Church (Yam 125). Earle
went wide letting Church by for tbe
125cc lead while Williams began to
pull away on' his 250, which was. the
hot setup. Church began closing the
gap on Williams, and the two soon
found themselves bar to bar in some
close racing while Earle trailed.
The 125cc Intermediates were; also
combined; 12 of tbem were unleashed
into the slew. Rick Gunderson (Eugene
Suz) led this portion of the pack that
was circulating rather slowly. Dwayne
Taylor (Hon of Eugene) got by Gunderson and soon caught up to the Pros.
Taylor .and Earle were having a
battle tbat closed them in on the leaders, Up front, Williams and Church
were going at it, neither giving an inch
while Earle and Taylor continued their
private war. Taylor, wbo has been elbowed about tbe possibility of moving
to Pro, got by 10-year motocross veteran
Earle wben Rich got sideways. On the
last lap. Church came around in first
after Williams fell victim to a slop
bole. Taylor took the Intermediate
win behind Williams. Lonny Sayles
(Yam) took a second and Jeff T oedtrnier
(Suz) third.
Moto two had Earle put his Honda
into a shon-lived lead before Williams
swooped by. Church tucked by as well
in the whoops which were flood-ridden.
The waterhole christened the "Big
Gulp" was engulfed by another "lake"
and caused havoc at tbe start of the Intermediate race. Guniierson put his
Floater into the lead but was devoured
by another of the many slop holes
hidden around the course. Williams
really pulled away from the 125s this
moto as the skies·broke loose and added
to the already standing water areas.
Church and Earle were having a dog
fight up front. Church hit a whoop and
went over tbe bars but quickly remounted to hold onto the 125cc lead
by a slim margin. Some cheating. wasallowed, such as jump cutting and
squaring off comers into the grass to

keep the 125s circulating. Williams was
having no problems moving at a rapid
pace that allowed him to slow toward
the last lap, letting 125cc riders Church
and Earle ride their heans out. Scoring
looked to be impossible, mud soaked
riders looked be same (cold, wet, tired)
in tbe 30·minute moto.
Taylor was again on the prowl and
caused Earle to crash wben tbe two
made contact. Earle remounted quick·
ly, but by this time, Church was gone
and took the 125cc Pro win. Williams
won the race, though, by the largest of
margins. Taylor crossed the line next
to take tbe Intermediates followed by
Earle, Sayles and Toetrnier.
The lesser experienced 125cc Novice
class was next to brave the foul weather.
Alan Fisher did a fine job of staying on
botb wheels on his Suzuki while the
rest of the troops took turns picking up
their machines. Fisher led aU of moto
two and appeared to be a breeze
winner; this time four of tbe 15 riders
were left at the flag. Fisher went 1-1
for the overall followed by Jim
Kragness witb his 3-2 and Larry
Bromwell (Yam/5-4), Track operator
Roger Campbell said he hasn't seen
conditions this miserable (rain-wise)
for years. Some seemed happy to
fmish, and others seemed glad to be in
the tower staying dry and warm (e.g.•
the Campbell clan).
In the Mini class, it was either sink
or swim .. Young Jeff Daily (Yam) led
the race but fell victim to the "lake,"
letting Billy Glenn (Kaw) free for tbe
win, taking moto two as well. Daily
went 3-2 for second in a race that had
irate fathers chasing their youngsters
from comer to comer. A rowboat
would have been convenientl
