relieved Gildea, was in front of Harry
McDermott,
who
had
relieved
Cae. The ruling for two riders in
the same pitslop at the same rime,
flTSt come, first serve, so it was a drag
race for the gas can. Arnold slid in
flTSt, a half a bike ahead of
McDermott. Arnold jumped off, and
Sparks jumped on, for his second run
of the race. After Sparks. took off,
McDermott was right behind him with
about !lO seconds between the two
after he gassed.
Back at the finish, Mike Chester
brought the winning three·wheeler to
a sliding stop with an ETof24:52:24.51.
Honda's second team came home with
an ET of 28:47:53.65. J. Wheeling
magazine's entry crossed the line in
29:13:47.41.
. "It was so unreal," said Chesler,
"coming into town, people yelling,
waving, nobody could believe we had
done it. Right before I crossed the line
I dropped it down two gears and rode
the rear wheels across the finish line. It
blew everybody away, including Sal
Fish."
Sparks, on
the other
hand,
commented, "I had about three to
four minutes on Wax going into the
first check at the .beginning of the race
when about 10 miles out, I hit a rock
in the sand wash and bent my wheel.
By the time I got to check one and
changed it, Wax pulled in, gassed up
and look off. He had about 15 seconds
on me before I left. I caugbt up [0
him, passed by, then I backed off, so
we could ride side by side. It was really
pretty neat, but just outside of Mike's
Sky Ranch I went off a cliff trying to
get around a car. I knew I could catch
Wax because I had more horsepower.
I think I pulled in 30 seconds behind
him at check two which was Mike's Sky
Ranch. On my way to Camalu I was
on the gas trying to catch Wax when I
went off another cliff. Tracey Dickson
.stopped to help me. We must have
tried for about 15 to 20 minutes until
we were both exhausted and then he
had to leave." Asked if Wax saw him,
Sparks replied, 'Yeah, he did, but he
was racing. That son of a gun, If I knew
he was going to be like that, I wouldn't
have played with him earlier. I finally
gOl it out of the ditch and I'll tell you,
. I've never been so tired in my whole life.
I was completely exhausted."
From the reaction of the motorcycle
and the car drivers alike, the three·
wheelers have paid their dues. No
longer will they be laughed at, but
welcomed in any off·road race.
