Thornton (Suz): GIbson on the gas at SSM MX By Terry Whytal ORANGE, CA, NOV. 7 With the National motocross season over for the year many local AMA Pros have returned to Saddleback to race the long 22 motOl at Saturday Saddleback MX. On hand this week to compete for the $1:'00 pune supplied by Standard Crank, Wbeelsmith and Panavile, were such names as: Chuck Sun, Goat Breker'Jeff Ward, Jim Gibson and a boadoa of very fast locals like Pete Snoneland, Clint Hardick, Ron Turn~ andJuan Benavidez. "The front end seemed a titde choppy in the fim moto," said Gibson after sweeping both 2:.occ Pro z:aces, "10 we changed a few things and it worked fine in the second moto. " Honda's Gibson looked smooth all day and his speed didn't seem to suffer from the choppy fork action. Gibson was able to get two excellent starts en route to his back· to· back wins. Kawasaki teamster Breker kept within striking distance of Gibson and seemed capable of moving into the lead in round two before lapped riden slowed his progress. "I didn't really want to ride that fast but if GiblOn was going to, 10 was I," noted Breker later. Suzuki rider Clint Hardick was able to bold off Hoada'. Sun in moto one to place third while Yamaha rider John Whelchel grabbed fu~~ ahead of Can· Am star Juan BenaVldez and Honda pilot Ron Turner. Benavidez ran a close third in round two action as Kawasaki hopeful Billy Liles from Georgia showed his speed in working to founh by moto's end. Sun ran into problems and dropped to 18th, leaving fifth to Turner. Whelchel finished sixth and Hardick took seventh in the second moto. Overall it was Gib· son, Breker, Benavidez, Hardick, Whelchel and Turner. DC Yamaha rider Pete Snoneland surprised everyone by passing Breker for the lead with two laps remaining in the first Open Pro moto. Before Brek· er could regain his composure Snorteland had reached the checken and taken a big win. Snorteland proved it was no fluke in round two as he powered into the lead and held off Breker's charges to earn the overall share of the purse money. Yamaha rider Jeff HicU held the lead early in round 'one but Breker and Snoneland both passed Hicks on a right·hand sweeper and he had to settle for third. Yamaha-mounted Greg Zitterkopf rounded out the top three in moto two to snare the third place overall purse money while Wheelsmith Maico rider Clark Jones put together a couple of good rides to nail down founh. Moto Meister's Scott Johnson placed his Maico futh for the day. Kawasaki teamster Jeff Ward was all set to top the 125cc Pro class after easily winning round one but an uncooperative motorcycle .ended his day early. Yamaha rider Ron Lechien went on to win the second moto but it was Troy Blake who slipped his Yamaha in for two third place finishes and matched the overall win. Kawasaki:s Billy Liles fmished second overall, with Lechien third, Suzuki rider Dean Cates founh and Yamaha· mounted Doug Dubach fifth. Results . OPEN PRo: 1. Pete S _ n d IVoml; 2. MX· It was another convincing victory for Montclair Yamaha's Greg Zitterkopf today at DeAnza Cycle Park when he added another I-I GARDENA, CA, NOV. 12 victory to his credit. Zitterkopf quickly jumped into the lead of the fint moto in the Open Pro class with Suzukimounted Eddie Micheti and Tom Mattox (Yam) in punuit. Michetti stayed within striking distance for a few laps, but Zitterkopfs pace was a little bit too much for the Suzuki pilot to handle. Zitterkopf went on to take the win followed by Michetti and Mattox. But in the second moto. it was Michetti who rocketed into the lead ahead of Zitterkopf and Mattox. Michetti managed to hold on to the lead for the next three laps but couldn't shake off Zitterkopf. By the founh lap, Michetti surrendered his lead and eventual win to Zitterkopf. Mattox finished third. One Of the more exciting races of the day was produced from the 2:'0cc Intermediate class when another Montclair Yamaha rider,' J. W. Hansen, got off to an early lead in the f1J'St moto in front of Ron Lawson, who was on a pre-production, watercooled Suzuki, and Chad Werner (Hon). But Hansen ran into problems during the fint lap, staDing his motor in traffic, thus gtving a comfonable lead to Lawson. Mter mtaning his engine, Hansen began his comeback by quickly passing W~ and letting after Lawson. Hansen, at o~ point, managed to get within five seconcU of the leader, but that was aU as Lawson went on to take the win. Knowing he had to win the aUimponant second moto, Lawson took his Suzuki in front of the pack with Hansen following closely in second while Werner foUowed in third. The batde was tough between the two leaders as they fought for the lead_ At times. Hansen snuck his front wheel just ahead of Lawson, but the Suzuki pilot never let off the gas to keep his. slim lead. As the moto progressed, Hansen showed signs of fatigue,! and Lawson's lead grew. At the finish, Lawson had ·a narrow margin ovc:r Hansen. Werner finished a consistent third. In the 12:'cc Novice class, John Cushingham of Van Nuys Suzuki took a hotly contested victory in both motOl just ahead of Suzuki-mounted Mark Wiedeman. Finishi:tain third was rider Mike Long Beach Yam Heyne after combining two thirds. By Tom Corley Bill Jewell has been a top 500c Pro for many years. Unfortu nately, Bill dropped out of th racing scene when he suffe from a knee injury in the 1980 USG at Carlsbad. Tonight, Bill made comeback and won the 500cc Pro ra in Continental Moto-spon Club moto cross at Ascot. Chuck Lunde proved to be competition for JeweU and was able control the early fint moto lead. was until Jewell found a way to wo by. Lunde shot back out ahead wi Jewell playing follow·the-leader. H tried every trick he could to get by, and his persistence paid' off. Jewe finally took over' the lead when passed Lunde on the jump right befo the palm trees. The final moto went i Jewell's favor once more, and this ga him the overall win over Lunde. T&O Yamaha's Tim shelton rode his very best in the 125cc Pro class. Shelton won the fint moto in front 0 Craig Westergaard and Dave Hamada. The fmal moto was crazy, and half the top competiton dropped out. Eric Coffin bailed in a sweeper, and Sean Gilboy lost his chain. Shelton had the lead tiU the last lap when his bike cut out in the comer after the crash wall jumps. Hamada enjoyed this and took over the lead with Glenn Page moving up to second. Hamada took home the fint-place money over Westergaard. Page and Shelton. Pete Murray simply outrode every-. one else in the 2:'Occ Pro pack. Murray had the fmt moto lead with Norznan Nilsson corning clOlest to him. Murray had the lead once more in the final moto, but ev.eryone else changed positions. Nilsson was back in futh. David Nakamura was now second and after him the whole time was Steve Rhyan. Two finu gave Murray the fint-place money while Nakamura took home second cash, and Rick Johnson won third. Rick Luck hasn't raced in five yean, yet he came out last week and won t~ :'OOcc Junior class. Luck said that his hands were sore after the ride. Top competitor Mike McDonald had to settle for second last week, but this time he figured out how to beat the newcomer. McDonald beat Luck in both motOl for the f1J'St·place trophy. Eric Nagao and Joe Signor are both top competiton in the l2:.cc Junior class, and they had their share of problems. Nagao was leading the fint
