Washington's Jim Anderson scored two wins at CMC Saddleback. (Continued from page 18) pride, Hileman swore from his hospital bed that his racing days are over and he plans on being a tuner from now on. Wben racing resumed, Mark Me10en on a 400 Yamaha and Scott Paul Lee on another Yammie took off in a five.lap sprint for the finish line, with Meloen pulling in just a few sec· onds ahead of Lee, who was cOll5Oled by the fact that his.second made him 400cc Box Stock class winner for 1981. The second Super Street race was the place to watch this month's installment of "War of the 550s," wherein Eugene Coward on a 550 Honda and Norm Benedum on a 550 Yamaha Seca ride around the track for lOlaps with less than 20 feet between them at any time. Just for the crowd's pleasure, they occasionally trade the lead back and forth. No one was taking any bets on which rider would take the checkered flag, as Coward and Benedum put on this kind of display everytime they race and frequently manage to surprise everyone. But although Benedum was ahead this time by 15 feet on the final hairpin tum, Coward pulled past with a mighty burst of Honda horsepower to win by 10 feet. All that tooth and nail, tire to tire racing paid off for Coward: he took flTSt in the 550cc Super Street class for the 1981 season and Benedum is 1981 class winner in 550cc ox Stock. Anderson cleans upafCMC Saddleback MX By Mike Klinger ORANGE, CA, NOV. 15 Ri;-:·d.~i~nJg~o~ut ~o~fi~Lolin;bew, WA, 20 Y Jim An11 derson completely dominated the Continental Moto-sports Club's Saddleback MX. Despite never having ridden on the Saddleback track before, Anderson won the 250cc Pro class and came up one position short in the 125cc Pro class. Maico-mounted Mike Kell put his 490 through two outstand· ing rides as he bested Chuck Lunde (Yam) twice for the overall. R. Hoffman (Yam) won the 125cc Pro division although Anderson won moto two. Due to the stadium event the same day, the turnout was low. In only a three man Open Pro class, Kell had little trouble trouncing tbe rest of the field. All the Open classes were combined for their two motos so Kell ran into slower riders as his two motos began to wind down. In moto two, Lunde pulled the holeshot and led the field for eight laps but Kell muscled his way to the lead and the eventual overall win. Lunde was second. When the 250cc Pros lined up it was known that the man to beat was the local star, Mike Beier (Yam). Beier pushed into the first tum off the start and an unknown rider decked out in Yamaha attire was right there to challenge the local. Whoever was number 244 was super hot! His machine sounded very crisp like a factory bike and his style was one. that no one has seen at the local tracks. The hot shot turned out to be Anderson, down from the state of Washington to contest the upcoming CMC Golden State series. Midway through the fust moto, announcer John Bethea commented that Anderson was turning some pretty fast laps. Bethea compared Anderson's times to those of the fastest at Saddleback Park, one beinjt held by Honda's Jim' Gibson. That's impressive. Anderson went on to win both motos of the 250cc Pros but Beier hung on to Anderson in both events. In moto two, Anderson lapped riders all the way up to--fourth place. . Anderson again put on a show in the 125cc Pro class. In moto one Anderson took very slow opening laps to break his water-cooling in, but by the middle of the motO he started to race. Hoffman was leading at the time and Anderson pulled in behind Hoffman but the gearbox went. Hoffman won with Mark Denning (Suz) and Robbie Collins (Suz) on his tail. Greg Zitterkopf topped the DeAnza Open Pro class. Hoffman and Anderson again were at each other's throats in moto two. Anderson was the victor but Hoffman won the overall cash. Results MINI JR: 1. Kawasaki support rider Curt McCuistion continued to do what he does best last Sunday at DeAnza Cycle Park by taking complete command of a prestigous 250cc Pro class. McCuistion pulled his traditional holeshot aboard a pre-production 250cc Kawie. In clOle punuit of the leader were La Habra Yamaha's David Taylor, Malcolm Smith's Eric Mac Cracken (Yam), Track 'N' Travel's Ed Arnet (Mai) and Gary Denton (Suz). McCuistion extended his lead within a few laps, but the battle over RCond and third produced the mOllt action. MacCracken stayed within threatening distance of Taylor throughout much of the race, but MacCracken's effoits began to fade midway through the mota. Back in fourth Arnet began feeling the heavy pressure of Denton, surrendering his fourth spot on the eighth lap. Denton continueQ his drive by reeling .in MacCracken a few laps later. Time was quicly running out for Denton with only two laps remaining_ MacCracken managed ta hold back Denton but, tluriDg the whiceflaglap, _ Denton labored his way past Yamaha pilot. earning third. In the Open Pro class Greg Zitcer kopf roosted his way into the lead . the first moto with Arnet, U. Suzuki's Bob Elliott and Dale hot on his tracks. Positions remai the same until the fifth lap when snuck. past Elliott, taking over third spot. Elliott's probl continued when Pro Circuit rider B Keefe (Hus)·also slipped by two la later. Keefe's drive didn't stop there be began to pressure Lewis a few later. By the next lap Keefe had over the third position. Zitterko went on to take the win with Arnet, Keefe, Lewis and Elliot trailing. At stan of moto two Zitterkopf aga' jumped into the lead pursued b Elliott, Arnet, Lewis and Keefe. Bo Zittekopf and Elliott ran away as rest of the pack battled. Keefe to work his way up by passing Lewis the founh lap and taking over third spot after Arnet dropped out. Zitterkopf easily took the win in froot of Elliott, Keefe and Lewis. Dean Cates (Suz), riding for KRW and Super Seer, dominated the uSec Pro class by winning both motOll just ahead- of 250cc Pro winner of McCuistion. Third place went to Craig Gormley, who rode a borrowed Honda to a ~-~ tally. Richard Hoffman (Yaull) of Dale's Modem Cycle finished fourth. L Results PEE WEE: 1. . . . . ~ ~ : 2."'.IahnI 1HanI.
