Open Pro race. Dave Coupe worked his Maico past Elliott but Yamaha rider Greg Zitterkopf turned the wick a notch higher and pushed his way to the lead. Zitterkopf continued to open his lead throughout the race and easily took the win. Elliott held on for second place as Coupe dropped from the moto with mechanical problems. Jim Ellis placed his Yamaha third ahead of Husky ride.r Bill Keefe and Maicomounted Dale Lewis. ''I'm able to concentrate more on racing now that I am out of school," commented Zitterkopf after clinching the 1300 ftnt prize money with the second moto victory. Zitterkopfs second moto win was easier than the first although Yamaha rider Don Griewe kept the pressure on from second place. Coupe finished third behind Griewe with Maico rider Kevin Davis grabbing third. Second overall honors went to Keefe with a 4-5 score, Ellis went home with the third place money and Lewis took fourth. The 250cc Pro race was a real cliffhanger. Honda rider Jim Tarantino, Kawasaki's Curt McCuistion, Can-Am star Juan Benavidez, and Yamahamounted Jim Anderson each had a shot at the lead in each moto. Tarantino edged Benavidez in moto one and then placed third the next round to take -the overall win. Anderson's exciting second moto win moved him to second overall with Benavidez earning third, McCuistion fourth and Suzuki rider Fritz Schlegel took fifth. Suzuki teamster George Holland completely dominated the 125cc Pro race by grabbing the early lead and opening huge distances betwccn himself and second place. Ron Lechien followed Holland to the checkers in round one but the Yamaha rider suffered from a poor second moto start and placed seventh. His score was still good enough to grab second overall from Suzuki rider Dean Cates who scored 8-2 for the day. Yamaha rider Mike Beier placed third in the second round but his first moto DNF kept him out of the money and Suzuki rider Mike Preston went home with the fourth place share of the purse. A special thanks to all the AMA reps and stewards that helped make this State Championship a success and to the AMA folks in Ohio for supplying the beautiful trophy plaques for all participants and the winning plaques the riders from Southern for California who handily outscorcd the northern riders who vowed to get even when the SoCal riders race up North.• ..... 00 0) .....
