~ryone else was having so much trouble. Burleson. who needed to finish no lower than second to insure his crown, had a few nervous moments waiting for other riders to cross the finish line. His 18 point loss included hot points at the first check and a minute loss at the second one. both of which were potential zeros in the score column, For some reason he has never done well at this enduro. Three years ago the outcome of this run determined the final standings between Burleson and Ted Worrell. Then as now, he managed to come away with the points he needed to secure the title. Third overall' went to Jack Penton, with a loss of 25 points. Hig~Point A rider was Wayne Beindorf, who is one of the leading riders on tbe Black Jack circuit. His loss of !I I points put him fourth overall. Mike Melton finished the day in eighth and was grateful to finish at all. Melton started on row 44 which, under normal conditions, could have been an ideal location. However, he' found trails deteroriating and had to maneuver around bogged-down riders as well as the natural obstacles. His bike began to give him trouble and at one point he was 17 minutes late. In the end he dropped !l8 points. Fortunately for TERA organizers, the Green County Four-Wheelers thrive on this kind of weather. They supply vehicles ~o transport workers to and from checks and assist with run supervision. Riders were stranded all over the iast two loops. The four-wheelers hauled back bikes and riders all afternoon and then as darkness was approaching went to work to free motorhomes, campers and vans trapped in the mud which rose up around the wheels as the rain persisted. All in all, it was a day that no one would soon forget. No club this season had struggled against so many adversities to post results accurately and promptly. Even the trophy presentation had to be made in the rain. It marked the end of an era as Burleson announced this was the last year he would compete for 'the National Championship. "After all," he grinned, " eight is enough." • Results THE KING Congratulations, King Richard Burleson on yourSth straight National Enduro Championship!
