The solution was, quite simply, to rotate it back to position which he did neatly with a couple hits from his hand while in mid-air off one jump. He caught and passed Wise for second a couple laps from the end. Yamaha support rider Peter Snorteland got a third-place start but was bumped back to futh by Suzuki's George Holland on lap three. Snorteland got him back three laps later and took fourth, leaving Holland to successfully fend off Suzuki-mounted Marty Moates. Donnie "Holeshot" Hansen lived up to his billing by leading the last hea t from start to finish. Honda test rider Ron Turner put his '82 CR250R into second but was upstaged when Johnny O'Mara worked his factory Honda up from a fourth-place start to second on lap six. . Honda-mounted Steve Martin took founh away from Marty Smith on lap six, also. Only the first two from each semi got to go to the final, and Suzuki sup· port rider Gary Denton wanted to ensure he was there by getting the jump out of the gate in the first one. Clint Hardick put on a strong drive through the whoops on his waterpumper to snag the lead on lap two, though, and he kept it easily after that. ' Yamaha support rider Phil Larson, who led momentarily during the race, finished second, a short distance ahead of Pro Circuit Husky rider David Gerig whose last shot into the final would have to come in the consy. Keystone MX Works Yamaha rider Jeff Hicks snared the second semi start ahead of Yamaha support rider Rick Johnson and PCP/Hi-Point Yamaha rider David Wood. However, Johnson put his '82 YZ250J water-cooled production bike into the lead after the halfway point and took the win. That put Hicks in second, but Marty Moates had other plans. Though plagued by a bad start, he was in seventh by the second lap and moving up steadily. He was fourth by lap four and passed Yamaha-mounted David Taylor for third with three laps to, go. Moates followed Hicks around for a little while. Coming into the shaq> left at the mechanics' area, Moates 'locked his rear wheel and slid underneath Hicks. Moates quickly pointed his bike up the next straight, dropped the clutch and had the inside line and second place going into the next tum for a spot in the final. The last chance for a starting posi· tion in the final came in the consy, and only the winner would go. Gary Denton got his second holeshot of the night on his Paul Thede·tuned RM but bailed on the first lap, along with a number of others. That suited Jimmy Weinert just fine as he was there to take advantage of it and scooted his Jammin' USA Kawasaki into the lead. Lap after lap, the ''Jammer," the so-called old man, kept the point until Jeff Hicks got a better drive out' of one turn and put Weinert on the trailer. Lance Moorewood led from start to finish in the special four-stroke exhibi·· tion race on his White Bros. Honda single·shocker. "There were a couple guys back there, but they're so heavy - the bikes - they tire you out, and you've just gotla Slay consistent. I just studied really hard; I came out here Thursday and got some practice in. Then I concentrated real hard on the gate; I figured it was all in the start." Final Glover knew the importance of the start, also, and chose the spot to the . inside of the starter's box. "I just thought if I could get off to a good jump, then I'd be the first one in the tum, and from there I could move out in the tum where I wanted to be," he claimed later. "It worked perfect for my heat race." . Indeed, and it worked to perfection again in the fmal's starts. Once the gate dropped, Glover was never app.roached by his competition as he put five seconds over the field after three laps, 10 seconds after eight. Following him around on the first lap w~ a line of red machines with Ron T.umer, Jim Gibson, Donnie Hansen an'd Chuck Sun trying to stay with t~e yellow and white-clad figure. Bell, , Barnett, Bailey and Wise filled in the n~tspots. I Compared to the heat races, the fmal was a bit anticlimactic. Gibson rnioved to second on lap four, and th,ough he was able to close the gap on Glover slightly in the final laps, there was little doubt as to the outcome of the race, barring mechanical failure or a mistake. Hansen slipped into third on lap six and spent the rest of the race there. Bailey worked his way up from eighth to fourth by lap seven, but Bell broke away from Barnett, inched up on Bailey and stole fourth on the white flag lap. Sun came out of his fU'St major race since reinjuring himself at the Motocross des Nations with a sixth. ''I'm pleased (with) the way I rode," he reported, "and that's more important right now, to me, rather than results, coming off injury. The potential's there; 1m really gonna build on that this winter, and next year I'm gonna be all supercharged and ready to gor" For Barnett, "It was just one of those nights. I got crashed a few times. If it's one of those bad ones, it might as well be tonight." He finished seventh, but he- already had the- Supercross crown clinched.
