In the Over 30/Enduro class, Mike
Maley, aboard a Honda XR500, and
Darius Gramley, riding a Kawasaki
KDXJ75, provided some of the day's
most exciting racing. In moto one, in
spite of a miserable sixth-place start,
Gramley had claimed the number one
slot by lap two with Maley in hot
pursuit. Time and again, Maley
attempted to get around, but Gramley
met every challenge. On the final lap,
Maley gave it that extra push in 'the
sand straight taking over the lead. His
lead was short-lived as Gramley regained first and held on until the
checkered flag.
Moto two looked like a replay of
moto one, only this time it was Maley
holding off Gramley. but on lap four,
Gramley slid out trying to pass and
quickly dropped to fourth place.
Gramley was unable to get around second place Jake Warren on a SUluki
RMI25 and had to settle for a moto
third and second overall.
, In the combined Junior and Senior
Mini class, Jackie Horner took an easy
first moto win with Blayne Rowland
second. In moto two Rowland took the
holeshot followed closely by Mark
Myatt and Jackie Horner. On the
second lap, Myatt and Horner held a
meeting allowing Junior Mini hot
shoe Bebob Burgess to slip into second
behind Rowland. By the final lap,
Horner had closed the gap and was
within striking distance of Burgess and
Rowland but time was running out.
Burgess waved Horner by, and he closed
in for what most expected to be a lead
change. Rowland, however, kept his
head and held Horner off to the finish.
It was a good day for the Rowland
boys with Boyd taking third in Senior
Mini and Baden taking second in
Junior Mini behind Bebob Burgess.
Tom Hamilton and Lee Uribe
staged their usual ba ttle for 125cc
ovice top honors with Hamilton
falling early in moto one and working
his way back up to overtake Uribe on
the final lap. Moto two was dominated
by Hamilton.
All the 250 and Open riders were
combined with one 125cc Expert
added just for fun. Expert rider Royce
Danner on a KX420 teased Novice
rider Frank Matz on a KX250 staying
just out of reach until Expert Floyd
Robbins appeared on a YZ125.
Robbins started after everyone else
and expertly worked his way through
the pack and was pressuring Danner at
the finish.
Moto two once again saw Danner in
the lead being dogged by Matl. Any
ideas of playing with Matl soon
changed when Matl slipped low in the
pit turn and took the lead. Danner
quickly recovered and before they
reached the sand straightaway, Matl
was once again being pelted by the big
420. Danner cruised to an easy firstplace Expert win with Matl taking first
in the 250cc Novice class.

Baker blasts pot
race at Interstate
MX
By Rebecca Sands
OKLAHOMA CITY, OK, OCT. 18
Safety, rider interest and good
times are making the new Interstate Motocross Park a popular
track already, Even all the rain
couldn't cancd the race. Owner Howard
Musgrove simply made a whole new
track, bypassing the many water holes.
The Experts lined up for a pot race.
The new track was fast, with few turns
and lots of straightaways. David Baxter
(Kaw) shot out in front as the gate
dropped, but bowed to Scott Cook
(Suz) then Chan Baker (Hon). Jim
Thomas (SUl) started moving up
through the pack from his next· to· last
start. Across the finish, it was Cook,
Baker then Thomas.
The second mow, Mike Morrison
(SUl) pushed to the front, followed
closely by Baker, Thomas and Cook.
Baker passed Morrison to take over the
lead, but Thomas, on the move, passed
both riders. In the front, lookin' good,
Thomas suddenly broke a chain, and
Baker slid around, winning the moW
and first overall. Cook finished 2-2 for
second overall while Robert Reynard
(Hon) placed 4-3 for third.
The Mini Seniors, future Experts,
raced today, as usual, like it was to be
their last! Fast guys Mike Hammer
(Yam), Tommy Newman (Yam) and
Whisperin' Smith (Yam) arc quite
often the ones battling it out at the
front. Today Newman jumped out in
front the first moto and stayed there.
Behind him came Hammer, Deral
Hardy (Yam) then Smith. On the
second lap, Smith got around both
riders to ride across the checkers
second, Hammer third and Hardy
fourth.
Newman came out in the lead the
second mow. Hammer, Smith and
Hardy rode next. Smith passed Ham·
mer and went after Newman. He
finally got around to take over the
lead. A determined Mike Hammer
turned on the gas to pass' both Newman
then Smith, and rode triumphant
across the finish. Smith was next,
cwman earned third, Hardy was
fourth. Hammer's strong ride was rewarded with a first overall. Smith took
second, Newman third and Hardy
fourth.
