Edward. AF8 MX
By Lee Taylor
EDWARDSAFB, CA, OCT. 25
Twice a year Edwards Air Force
Base opens its gates to motocross
racing and the California Racing
Club was there for their second
20
Edwards race of the year. In addition,
this was the last chance for CRC
memben to qualify for the Nov. 15
San Diego stadium race.
For 250cc Pro John Whelchel, it was
a victorious day. At the controls of a
new Yamaha water-cooled YZ250,
Whelchel soared where eagles dare to
fly.
The first moto found Whelchel out
in front. holding off Yamaha aces Pete
Snoneland. Jim Holley and Ed McCoy
down to the wire, but .not without a
batde. Snoneland hounded Whelchel
0ft1' every inch of the desen track as
Holley. troubled by mechanicals,
DNF. Rick Hulsizer, the only Honda
racer in a field of Yamahas, had a
rough round. He had a beautiful stan,
pulling the holeshot, but soon found
himself running on a flat tire. Hulsizer
10It valuable time on the side of the
course, pumping up his tire, but
managed to rejoin the pack and work
his way up to seventh before moto's
end.
When the finish line loomed into
sight, Whelchel led the way with
Snoneland close behind and McCoy
holding a solid third.
When the machines came to life for
their second encounter, Hulsizer once
again .srabbed the hoIeshot followed
by Holley. McCoy, Snoneland, Brian
Chereskoff and Whelchel. who after
problems out of the pte. was running
sixth.
Positions were changing throughout
the pack with Snoneland ·on the move
after Holley. who had taken the
command position. Snoneland 10It no
time in slipping a wheel under Honey
as Wbelchel, now in founh, had him in
his sights as he needled McCoy for the
third place slot. Holley and Snoneland
were going for it, fighting to stay out
in front of WheIchel who took over
third and was closing. Whelchel was
pining one second per lap and on one
lap, five seconds. Taking over second,
Whelchel was on the gas but
Snoneland was letting out all the stops
and putting lOme space between
himself and Whelchel until he went
down on the bottom section of the
course with half a lap to go. Snone·
land remounted as Whelchel zoomed
by to take command, but still hounded
by Snorteland who managed to close
to within three bikelengths of Whelchel
by the end of the race.
For Whelchel, it was top money for
the day, as Snoteland took down
second place loot and third overall
went to McCoy for a 5·5 ride.

O'Mara.

American Honda, showed the 125cc
Pros how a National and European
star racer handles a track like
Edwards and in the process, took a
grand slam win.
