Herndon tops Texas 100 By Bob Bagwell COLLEYVILLE, TX, OCT. 10 Texas flash Bill Herndon, riding a factory Honda 250, won the Texas 100, a l00-lap shan track. Sammy Sweet, the hard charger from HOUItOD, led the fim 50 laps with Don Hamilton aDd Shawn Stoval right OD his tail. The 75th lap abowed Herndon out in front, aDd be held it to theeod. In other action, john Gladwell euily won the 125cc main over Willie McCoy. james Harrington aDd Tubby Doaon foupt a hard battle for the 250cc Amateur win with Harrington coming out on top. Odel Davia aDd his super Yamaha 750 had a fight for the Open main victory with similarly.mounted Willard Kelley, Davia getting the nod at the checkers. The bomb showed us Bruce Neilson (495 KTM). ldaho's number one desen racer Ron Dillion (49!1 Yam). Over !l0 rider and smolte bomb king himself Hal Wing (465 Yam) and another Over !l0 rider. Paul Chilton (4!10 Hus). At mid-pad was old man of the desert Preston Gerber (495 KTM) followed by Morgan. Neilson's lead was shon and sweet when he unloaded after hitting a sagebrush full of sand. This left tbe lead to 160 pounds of swing romance Dillion, who now was being chased by Morgan aDd a new face, motOC1'OllRl' Terry Abernethy (490 Mai). Though Morgan was favoring his left arm and bad from a previous industrial accident, he was not going to ICttle for following the ladies' man from Idaho and soon took over the lead. Up through the pad came Gerber until he claimed third, followed by Strong and Chilton. Dillion was 50 close to Morgan it looked like he was stuck to his old brown coat. Fifth and fint 250cc was "Wild" Willie Tasker (250 Suz) who rides as crazily as he talks. Amateurs attack Rio Bravo MX By Cherlle Wiese HOUSTON. TX. OCT. 10 The weekend of weekends recently took place at Red Wallings' Rio Bravo MX Park as Amateurs moved dirt on the day preceding the best of the best who bent it backfor big buclr.s on super Trans-USA Sun- day while a crowd of over 5,000 watched the intense racing put together by Pace Management aDd TCR Promotions. The Amateun had the pleasure of goin' for it on one fme piece of dirt as the well manicured course provided them with all the elements that make Texas tough motocrOll5 what it is fast and furious. In fact, the trad was 50 fast all weekend that riden had trouble passing on equally matched machines. The fast came when the 100cc c1asa riders bent it bad behind james Felts (Yam). Felli on the yellow bird came from behind to take over tbe lead from . early leader Darin Williams (Yam). who chased the "Fleeing Felli" to the checlr.ers while John Leatherwood (Yam) wormed his way through traffic for third. Scott Thomas (Yam) moved into the spotlight during Muni Junior action by taking the win with a quick and consistent 1·2 effort. Second in Mini madness was Blake Garland (Yam). who edged out "Gassin' .Gary" Stevenson (Yam). Mini Seniors searched for the fast lane as Richie Hull put together !I-I finishes for the overall victory. Hull took the overall by coming on strong in round two as Rusty DoveIl (Suz) recovered from round one for second ahead of "Casual" Kit Vick (Yam). Round one winner, Stacey Marek (Yam). finished off the pace in round two after a turf test. Jerry LeBlanc (Suz) blasted the boots off the 12Sec Intermediates while "Cool" Ken Fox (Yam) made his first 125 ride a successful one managing a second ahead of Eddy Colter (Suz). Richie Hull (Yam), aDd Greg Bonin (Suz) in tbe scorekeepers nightmare. "Sure Shot" Steve Haag (Suz) holeshot his way ahead of the 250cc Novices. aDd from that point on, Haag could do no wrong as he won with ease ahead of red rocIr.et riden Danny Herrin (Hon) and Carl Hope (Hon). who batded all day long. "Texas" Tommy Hudson (Yam) styled his way to victory in 250cc Intermediate wan. Hudson leaped off the jumps, doing a "Iook-mom-nohands" trick, and sped to victory by taking the round two win with the chips down. Second in each round was Ronnie Hermann (Yam). who edged out Dewayne Wegmann (Bul). Wegmann, the boy in blue, gave it his best shot on tbe blue bike finishing third in round two and overall ahead of Jim Vaughn (Kaw). Final furious event in the shon aDd sweet showdown was the Open Intermediate c1asa that had Mark Witt (Hon) in the driver's seat after two rounds of racing. Second with two fine efforts was jeff Wilson (Yam) as jay Earnest (Suz) edged out David Smith (KTM) for third while Danny Herrin (Hon) put together a pair of fives for fIfth. Show Arena. This is the fim time since early spring that one rider won both main events. Even though the maiDa were dominated by Reichardt, during tbe heat races it was impo.ible to tell who might take it all. Reichardt had his share of ~roblema during the heat races cauamg him to UIC a bad-up bike becaUIC of din packing in his clutch. Division Two riden put on a super show with a lot of passing all night long. Linning up for the main on the Scratch line were Steve Robinson, Dennis Hanley, Kun Bechtold and "Squeak" Madonna. On the 10-yard line were Norm Rindom and Tim Mclntoah. Action in the fU'St comer was very hot, 50 hot in fact that three riden went down bringing out the red flag for a restart. On the second attempt, all the riden made it through with Hanley =~ the lead. Robinson told had a ~ battle ~ing for second. By the third lap, RobJmOD had pulled away from Bechtold aDd bep.n cbing in on Hanley. Hartley went wide coming out of tum two, aDd this was all RobiDlon needed as be slid put for the lead aDd win. When Rohr got away from tbe wall, Reichardt aDd Bo'l had both gotten by him. On the third lap, Rohr went wide. again; this time WeiguJD got uDder him for third place. At the white Oag, it wu Reichardt aDd Bo'l with a slight lead. Weifum in a comfonable third. OrmISton had c101ed in on Rohr aDd begun pushing him hard. In the laar corner. Ormiston got by Rohr with a wild move. Reichardt went on to win the fU'St main.
