Lucerne Valley - Red Mountain - Plaster City - Searchlight - Sidewinder ROBe Desert Hotline Corda cops D·38 Grande Wind H&H By Loretta Pipkin PLASTER CITY, CA, OCT. II Craig Corda (Frontier Suz) triumped over the elements as well as the pack in the Imperial Valley M.C. Grande Wind hare 'n' hound. Three different loops of 21, 25 and 25 miles made up the course. Everyone fought a 50 mph wind and the accompanying dirt and debris through the whole event. Don Seay, Jr. gave it a gallant try on his 125cc as he was first to the tressel on the first loop followed by the bigger bodies and bikes of Corda and Claude Maynard. Then out of the dust came another l25cc in the lead in the guise of Torsten Corum. It was short-lived as he got a piece of wire tangled up in his rear wheel, putting him out of the race past check two. Seay got a .fIat that ended his run. Corda now had his line dialed in and the big Suzuki was responding to his call. "I had no problems," said Corda, "it was a smooth ride barring the sore neck riding against the wind." Paul Eddy moved into second spot a couple of minutes behind Corda. "My 250 was having a time against the wind. If it had had a windshield it would have been pitted to no end," quipped Eddy. Port Paul finished third overall followed by Vets Bill Reams, Richie Kind and Ed Mundy. Unofficial results OVERALL: 1. Craig Corda ISuzl; 2. Paul Eddy lYam); 3. Port Paul (Yaml; 4. Bill - . lYam); 5. Bill Thornberg (Suzl. for Hill in that the rivalry with Folks goes back a generation as his dad Bill and Daryl's dad Casey have been racing each other with a vengeance for over 10 years. To add frosting to the cake Billy's win came in a race where his dad happens to be a member of the sponsoring club. The 250s were next and motocrosser Brad Hilton surprised everyone including himself when he led the first lap and a half on his Roger Welch-prepped Can-Am, Fred Hansen was not far behind and was set up for a fight to the finish when Hilton's machine developed carb llls and forced him off the pace. From there it was a cakewallt for "Fast" Fred who has taken the checkered flag first so many times in MRAN racing, MRAN 250cc points leader Glenn Wischmeyer (Hus) is starting to show the strains of leading the points table as he again struggled in behind Hansen in third place. Anthony Pasqualotto again bolted to the front of the Open Expert race as he led a Maico freight train consisting of himself and Kevin Welch. Pasqualotto led for a lap and a half but munched it hard in the rocks before Beer Bottle pass. Welch witnessed Anthony's crash, pulled up to him to make sure he was 0 K and then jetted on to the win. Pasqualotto picked it up and finished a painful second while Open Amateur sensation Roger Peters (Hus) was riding with blood in his eyes in third overall, first Open Amateur on his Bobby Williams-tuned mount. D·38 Barking Spider HS falls to Foland By Chuck Harper LOOMIS HILL, NV, OCT. 4 Team VegasCyc1es' Bill Hill, Jr. flew his Suzuki Floater to top 125cc Expert honors at the third annual Silver City Scramblers Motorcycle Racing Association of Nevada-sanctioned "Homey Toad" European Scrambles. Sportsman Cycle teamster Fred Hansen bulled his KTM to a second successive 250cc Expert win while Duralube-backed Kevin Welch (Mai) picked up the Open Expert triumph. It was also W elch's second straight win in MRAN competition. The age divisions saw Casey Folks, Jr. (Hus) c.apture the Over 50 crown as Ron "Zoomie" Loomis (Mai) put it on the Over 58 set. The 125s were the first to go and Billy Hill immediately jumped into a . huge lead. MRAN 125cc number one Daryl Folks lagged behind in second on a .Husky support bike while last race winner Paul Emerson (Kaw) was destined to suffer a rear tire blow·out six miles from the start, "Berzerko" B~nnie Brown (C-A) was also an early casualty when he collided with another rider off the start. Hill was flying as they made the first loop but much to his dismay he suffered a rear flat. However, it did not slow him down much and he finished with a comfortable margin of victory over Folks in what was undeniably his day. It was an especially sweet victory Jeff Foland (Knobby Shop) outdistanced rival D-38 riders in the Barking Spider HarelScrambles put on by Fudpucker Racing Team. Foland took an early lead in the four-loop race, and at the end of one he was 50 seconds ahead of Morgan Malocco, who was stretching out his factory Honda in prep for the Baja. "I could get on him (Foland) in the rough stuff," said Morgan, "but he ran away in the straights." It proved true as gearing and a flat put Malocco on the trailer, while Foland put the distance between him and the next guy, Don Seay, Jr. was pourin' it on with his 125cc. He moved past Richie King and Lloyd Thomas putting him within a couple minutes of Foland. Into the third loop Foland lapped nine riders while Thomas disappeared on his 125cc and Seay put 18 spots between himself and the next competitor. Dale Conner notched the 250cc Amateur class win and third overall, while Vet Expert "Papa Bill" Reams whistled in ahead • OPEN EX: 1. Jell Foland; 2. rim _ . 250 EX: 1. Port Poul; 2. Matt Hope; 3.
