TEN YEARS .... 00 .... AGO 0') Terry Donch (Tri) put on his best TV star ap~arance and walked away with the Race of Champions half mile, run at San Jose for ABC·TV. Dorsch led all the way, and at the finish was fol· lowed by Dave Hanlen (Tri), Jim llice (Tri) and Bart Markel (H·D). There was a Junior race on the program, and it featured two familiar protaganists. Despite 'being handicapped with an unfamiliar Triumph Gary Scott aced Yamaha-mounted Kenny Roberts for the win. Sa~r Joe Einhorn broke Evel Knievel's existing record with a leap over 20 cars at intermission in the San Joe race. Einhorn's jump was also recorded by ABC. The Trans-AMA motocross series moved to Orlando, FL, and some of the best racing of the series was produced there. Suzuki's Sylvain Geboen and Husky's Heikki Mikkola really went at it for three motos, but in the end Geboers triumphed. Pierre' Kanmaken (Hus) and John Banks (CZ) fmished third and fourth, while the first American was John DeSoto (Suz) at 10th o~rall. Doug Grant (AJS) bested Tom Rapp (Bul) in the 250cc National class. In an indoor short track in Ponland, OR, Novice llick Hoding upset local favorite Mark Williams in the main event, pocketing an extra $1000 in purse money as a result. Drag racer Don "The Snake" Pradomme ga~ motocross a try at Indian Dunes, finishing fifth in the Open Junior class. The Boonie Bounders M.C. held a hare scrambles in the Nevada' desert, but it was Californian Tom Smith (Hus) taking the overall as well as Open Expert win. Jack Johnson (CZ) was the 250cc Expert winner, while Suzuki·mounted Scot Harden topped the 125cc Novice class. Following a summer layoff due to injury, Bob Grossi returned to action at Sacramento and won the Open Expert class at a Dirt Diggers North motocross. Brother Bill was the 250cc Ex· pert champ on the same day.
