....... _ v_uara - A.hr. - Nap National but he truly opened some eyes as he placed himlelf as the third best speedway rider in the U.S. One of the fawrites. Alan Christian. got off to a ·bad stan in his first race. Christian finished fourth. hehind Sandona. nave Sims. and Duane Yarrow. Event seven was a perfect example of how up for this race everyone was. The match up was Dubb Ferren. Mike CUJ'OIO. Lance King. and Yarrow. All were ProI yet there were four restarts in the race and to the disappointment of many. King was out and listed in fourth. King. another favorite going into the night. was hoping to at least fmish in the top five. but he could not accompliah that. King will ride the entire season nest year overseas teamed up with Penhall - watch out world. King is good and will indeed be a threat to the world crown. At intermislion there was a three way tie for fint between Bast, PenhaD and Mike Faria. All had two wins and one second. The first race after tbe intermislion was a thriller featuring King. Bast, Siple. and Sandona. King and Bast were fighting it out for first place. but while they were they forgot one very imponant element, Sandona. On lap four Sandon went to the outside and moved in front of King and Bast. thus putting Bast to third and vinually out of the champiomhip spot. At the same time he put himlelf mto at least the top five. King finished second and Siple. was founh. The race of the nigb~ was event 16: PenhaD. Bobby Schwanz. Christian and CUJ'OIO. At this time Schwanz had only eight points and he desperately needed a win to Itay in contention. When the tapes went up it was Penhall taking tum one as the leader. Bruce was incredible and unbeatable, as he rode the race unchallenged. Christian finished second and Schwanz, having a bad gate, fmished a very disappoint· ing third. Curc.G was fourth. Sandona went on to win event 17 and maintain himlelf as contender. The very next event saw Penhall take care of the question of who is really numher one beating out Sims. King and Steve Lucero. Bruce had put a cap on the National Championship. ~ 00 0') ~ Action Now Magazine Amal Carburetors (England) Bates Leathers Bell Helmets Bel-Ray Oil Co. Special Thanks To Roger Stull In event 19 two of the top four riders were here. Bast and Faria along with Yarrow and Schwanz. Bast took the gate. led the entire race and took the win. Faria got second, putting himlelf. Bast and Sandona in a three way tie for second. Schwanz was third and Yarrow took the wrap up spot. After the final event everyone knew who was the National Champ. Penhall. however the books weren't in yet on second. third and founh places. There would have to be a run-off between Bast. Sandona and Faria. In the run·off all these riders took their time getting to the- line. When the tapes went up Bast £lew out of the gate with Sandona on his rear tire. Mike got some distance in the straightaway but every lap thereafter Sandona gained back some ground. At the tapes it was Bast, Sandona and Faria. So reigns Bruce Penhall. as the best. Bruce now holds the California State Championship. the National Championship. one half of the World Pairs title and of course the World Speedway Championship. • II you must go laster, think lirst how you'll look in plaster.
