"It was running.strong, but then 1 blew a base gasket," said Klinzmann. "I don't know what happened, it just CJuit," said a disgusted Wolff after parking his bike in the infield. "I had a leak in the oil lane and then it broke." said Pietri. "I thought maybe 1 could nune it around, but one I got sideways on the banking, 1 knew it was time to park it. " Lawson took advantage of all the attrition and moved up to third. By this time Freddie Spencer had a good lead on Mike Spencer in second, and that was the way the race would continue to thefmish. .A good distance bad, there was a good battle going on between the White's Truck Stop Kawasaki of Rich Chamben and DW Performance Honda rider Doug Polen. The two took their battle right to the end with Polen on top. Chamben' fifth place finish lifted him from seventh to sixth in. the final championship standings. Support Rae•• There was a full slate of support races including Expen Lightweight, Battle of the Twins and a complete Amateur program. "I did what 1 came to do," said Expen Lightweight winner Sam McDonald. The Team K&.N rider took an easy win in his heat race over Randy Renfrow to gain the pole and then proceeded to run away with ease from the field in the fmal. Again, it was Renfrow who proved the antagonist. By the halfway flags in the lO-lap event McDonald had seven seconds on Renfrow who had a similar margin on the furious battle taking place for third between Kevin Brunson, riding an Armstrong in a field of Yamahas, Rod Crosby andJohn Long. The battle was just as furious for sixth between David Reed and Nobuhiro Nakamura. The third place trio played the draft-and·pass game to the hilt. When the moment of truth came and the checkered flag was in sight it was Brunson holding off veteran Long, as Crosby watched scant feet away. Nakamura got the better of Reed in a similar battle. Malcolme Tunstall was all smiles after winning the Battle of the Twins event. Tunstall, riding the Syd's Cycle sponsored Ducati, led home the Bavarian Cycle Center sponsored BMW of John Long and Jimmy Adamo, on the Berliner Moton/Reno Leoni ducati. "I think it was about time," said Tunstall of his victory. "I had a feeling 1 was due and this was just the place to do it. There wwere a lot of friends here to cheer me on. I had all my braking points dialed in and ~n a smooth race. The only problems 1 had were with slower riden in the final few laps." On the stan it was Adamo moving out to a big lead in the IO·lap event, leaving Team Obsolete's David Roper, on a Harley-Davidson, to battle with Long and Tunstall. Adamo then dropped off the pace allowing Roper, T~nstaJl and Long to pass. It appeared Adamo was having some son of tnnsrnission or engine problem in the slower cornen of the infields as he would claw back his losses on the oval only to lose ground once back in the infield. Roper coasted to a stop while leading to check an oil leak. He lost about six positions while topped and then continued. Tunstall and Long swapped the lead for a lap or two until Tunstall was able to move past and open up a safe advantage which he held to the flag. Roper followed Long and Adamo with Doug Lantz fifth overall. Back in the pad two championship battles were taking place. Bill Atkinson, riding a Bavarian Cycle Center BMW, collected the Modified Production Amateur title with a fifth place fmish in that class. Devin Battley, on the Half Truck, Will Travel BMW, took the stock Production class title. He finished second in that class. The above classes plus GP and Modified Production Expert are all run together in Battle of the Twins. • Results SUPERBIKE: 1. _ 51*- (Hon); 3. ~ 51*- IHan); 2. Mike l - . 1K8wt; 3.
