With this advantage Brant was able to get the start and hold on for the win despite a hard try by Hoel, who later said "Man that ltid is fast. I tried everything I could and still couldn't get by him." The Fay Myers Honda King of the Hill race saw Jim Troudt challenging current lting Bryan Hoe!' Off the tapes it looked like Troudt had a slight lead until he went into the first tum too hot. This was all Hoe! needed as he slipped under Troudt and went on for a third win' in the King of the Hill series. This puts Hoel into a three way tie with Mark Borgman and Mike Golightly. The title will be decided at the state championship. Results JR MAIN: 1. lJInce Daroow; 2. Scott Brent 3. Bobby Hedden. HANDICAP MAIN;". Allen ROOr; 2. Chris Reichardt. DIV 2 MAIN: 1. St.... Smith, Sass smoke Steamboat Springs RR By Sump STEAMBOATSPRGS, co, SEPT. 27 Mark Smith and Bruce Sass thumped their way to victory in five out of 12 races, outhandling and outbraking the multi-cylinders in a crowd pleasing display of ability on the city streets of Steamboat Springl. Under fair skies, the Mountain Road Racing Aaaociation introduced high speed motorcycle racing to a large crowd on the newly laid out track at the base of the Steamboat Slti Area. A large percentage of the crowd, obviously green to road racing, were awed as tl;1e racers screamed down the front straight at over 100 mph and banked sharply into the hazard prone flJ'St tum. After the preliminary Novice race, Colo.rado class and a shortened (fivelap) Battle of the Twins race, Bruce Sass and good friend Rusty Sharp, both self-sponsored and Yamaha TT500-mounted, showed the fans and the other racers the hot line through the course in the 550cc Superbike race. The start of 500cc Superbike had the crowd on its feet as 40 riders jockeyed for position on a trad described as a bit cold at this 6800 feet above sea level mountain town. By lap six Sass had the trad and his tires heated up as he was turning 1;04s on the 1.1 mile course while in a tight dice with Sharp. Sharp took the lead on lap seven when Sass almost ran off the trad on the Island Bend while passing a badmarker. As they passed the start/ finish for the white flag, Sharp was in the lead with Sass a length behind in a determined pursuit. It was Sharp in front until the Island Bend, when Sass wicked the motor on at the Gondola Bend, the last sweeper before the finish, and shot a wheel length up front at the checkered flag. In the Class 3-4 GP, Mark Smith on his Inskeep Machine, Amsoil, and AU Cycle sponsored Yamaha TT500, fresh from an uncontested victory in the 850cc Superbike race, smoked off the line for the lead and soon left the field, putting on a six second lead by the second lap. Even though Smith wcked a haybale on tum one on his third lap, a tum that saw no less than four riders overcook it and take unexpected excursions into the dirt, Smith established a nine second lead which he held until the finish, with a good dice for second by #53, Rusty Sharp, and Rick Orlando. Sass grabbed a single cylinder victory in the lOOOcc Superbike over Ed Fleming, who was aboard his Track 'N' Trail Suzulti GSI100, even though Fleming was turning 1:03s on several laps as afternoon temperatures heated up. By five o'clock, the track was hot but not as hot as Mark Smith in the Class 1-2 GP Race. Smith powered to a four second lead by lap four as he was turning 1:01s in the fastest race of the day. Smith just about lost it on lap six when he got sideways on the infamous tum one. He had the crowd gasping as he slid the rear end when he missed a shift and caught too Iowa geaY at 80 + mph and made a recovery that had his heart thumping as fast as his Yamaha TT. Sharp pulled within four seconds of Smith on lap seven of the 10·1ap finale but Smith got his times down to a minute flat to win by seven seconds at the finish with Sharp second and Orlando third. .. motoW"- Ijiiiit inc. Matz blasted out with the holeshot in moto one and was never challenged as Darius Gramley and Billy Bruton were in an intense battle for second with Gramley holding Bruton of~ at the checkered flag. Moto two saw Gramley determined to take the lead but Matz wouldn't cooperate and Gramley found himself over a berm. But Matz was not to .ww~ it so easy this time when on lap two he got a closer look a t the soil and was back in fourth place playing catch up. He had moved up to the number two spot and was closing in on leader Hector Bautista but simply ran out of time before 'he could regain the lead and had to settle for second with Mike Malley talting third. Due to the shortage of Expert riders the 125cc and Open Expert classes were combined, with Jamie Killion holding off Floyd Robbins in the 125cc class and both of them finishing well ahead of the 420s in the Open class. Royce Danner took first in the Open class when Jimmy Sandvig tried to make a move in the sand and became airborne. Sandvig was checked out at the hospital but was allowed to go home. He has a couple of broken ribs and many bruises but should be fme.
