enough [0 be heard in Danas. Dave Shultz just shook his head. Pogue said, "Even I'm not unhappy with the way it turned out." Top Fuel Sam Wills was back in action at Houston and took the I'OIeS in Top Fuel with a 7.67/174.41 against Dennis Sargent's MTC Kawasaki at a an inbad-trouble 11.14 - 75.50. Dennis has been self sponsored until recently when he piclted up MTC. Wills was on a beautiful new machine designed and built by Carl. Ahlfeldt and Wills for European Champion Hanlt Venit to ride in the USA. It was a sort of field test for the new Kawa; Venit will be riding it at the World Finals. Wdls had advanced over Chris Hans when the Redneck Racing Team Kawasaki 1000t fire and Wills soloed to a 7.64/175.41. Dennis Sargent had retired Larry Haye when Larry bogged his Kawasaki at the line. Funny Bike Terry Kizer topped the Funny Bike ranks In front of 8 home town crowd. (Rle photo.) 'Dark' Horse' Nyberg takes Pro Stock at IDBA Lone Star National By Tom Lee HOUSTON, TX, SEPT. 12-13 Fifteen-year-old Russ Nyberg of Ft. Myers. FL. pulled a dark horse victory in the Pro Stock ranks of the International Drag Bike Association's Lone Star National. The son of a racing father, Carl O. Nyberg. Number two was Steve Tartaglia with an 8.93 and number three was Sid Pogue with an 9.07. Russ was way back in fJfthwith a 9.15. Nyberg got a freebie in the fant round when Doug WellhaUIeD of Houston broke his bike and wasn't able to make the call. In the quarter finals Gary Tonglet of Metarie, LA, drew a red light and Russ got handed another paa. 9.25/ 142.65 to 9.82/141.75. (Tonglet had wiped out number two To cap the balance of the Pro Stock action, Mike Keyte' turned a 9.07/ 147.%9 on his earned bye i,n the fant p". Hamp Osburn retired Tom ~rod at 9.2~/143:76 to 9.57/132.S4; Sid Po,gue lal~ a 9.06/145.76 on Dave Shultzs red lighted 9.40/141.50; and Ron Turner put a 9.21/144.00 on Clayton Hale's very troubled 16.S4. ' m L:_ _ _ D ••_ UIlI e - ' ~ IlIIO:U _. -- 1 In the semis Russ got an earned bye (short ladder) that Gary Tonglet had taken away from number two qualifier Steve Tartaglia for him. Keyte ran against Sid Pogue. Talk about psyching out! Sid and Mike approached the starting !iDe as though it were a girl that they were trying to steal from each other. Pogue won the race on the line; reaction time. .517 [0 Mike's .604. (Reaction time is the time in IeCODds between the green coming on and the bike leaving the line.) Pogue was .08 quicker at the start and .04 slower at the fiDish. Sid's winning time was 8.99/146.10; Mike's 10Iing time was 8.95/155.06. A new mph record for Mike but DO opportunity to back it up since he was out of the racer Pogue had lane choice in the fmal because of his 8.99 on the previous pall. At least a ~boIogical advantage, right? You cou dn't ten It. Pogue misIIed IIeCOnd gear. The kid could do no wrong. Nyberg was the winner, 9.05/144.46. Sid Pogue was the runner-up, 9.62/141.91. Ron Turner jumped three feet off the ground. Mike.Keyte honered lowt. Terry Kizer and John Sanda proved once again that the theoretical progressive tournament style ladder used in drag racing doesn't necr-arily always come out with numbers one and two in the finals. Kizer was IIeCOnd F/B ~er with an 8.029 and Sands was . with an 8.59. Ken Blackburn qualified number one with an 8.024. However, over Saturday night something happened that made Ken return to Swanton, OH, and lea~ the BiD Hahn Products! MTC/Mr. Turbo Kawa riderlas. Hahn arranged (as ru1es allow) for another rider. Charles Israel, to pilot the machine. Israel is a fme Professional rider but has little eight IIeCOnd experience ..• at least on a bike as quick and fast as the BHP machine. In the first round Israel got a bye that Kenny had earned for him and turned an 8.89/168.22. Sands easily outdistanced Mike Accord, turning an 8.88/155.97 to Accord's 9.28/149.25. Kevin Toome, who qualified strong with an 8.47. lost his strength against Terry Kizer's MTC/ Mr. Turbo Kawasaki. Kizer is a strong local favorite - Houston fans are really strong for Houston racers. Dave Covey turned a 9.16/135.33 on an unearned bye when Bob Lacey couldn't show. In the second round Israel had some handling problems with the BHP Kawa and lost to John Sands, 10.87/ 105.14 to the Sandman's 8.80/159.85. Kizer cut a beautiful light against Covey and laid down an 8.24/157.54 to Dave's 8.90/150.62. In the final run Sands cut a gorgeous. light (.595 reaction time against Kizer's .5(0) and out of the hole illoolted like Johnny was going to embarus Kizer in front of the home falb. However. about midway Johnny's CB900F caught IID01te and at the fiDish it was Kizer the wiDDer at 8.ZZ/161.87 with Sands croaing the fiDish at 6Z.S4 mph and a broken runner-up time olI7.57. ProComp Harold Windham of next-toHOlIItOI\ LaPorte. TX, sponsored by Performance Cyc1es of Pasadeua. made the home folks as happy as did Kizer. In the final Pro Camp run Windham laid down a 9.59/142.40 [0 beat Wayne Buckler's quicker 9.55 but slower 115.20. You can easily see where Wayne Ioet it. Modified eliminator The Modified Final saw Jeffery Reel against George Bryce Ill. Reel had a 9.52 record; George an 8.85. At the fmish it was Reel the wiDDer at 9.41/ 158.46 and Bryce the runner-up at 8.?J/lM..58. •
