Landrum, Benavidez, Spencer ace Austin MX By Cherlie Wiese AUSTIN, n, SEPT. 20 Austin MX was the site of exciting round' three in TCR's, ,AMA District 20 Fall Series. Exciting may not be enough to describe the intellle racing that took place from dawn to dusk. In Expert action, there were three winners as "Comeback" Kyle Landrum (Suz), juan "Tbe One" Benavidez (C-A) and Kirk "The Doughboy" Spencer (Yam) scored perfect I-I fmishes in each of their respective cl~. ' Mini madness continued in its usual, fonn as Cody Marek (Yam) piloted his Yamaha supported Rose Rich Yb to overall wins in Micro and Mini junior action with brilliant come-frombehind rides. "Mr. Mini Bike," Bryan Abernathy (Yam), dittoed last week's perfomiance by winning Mini Senior and Mini Stock action. Abernathy is the only rider to win a moto in both classes. ~4 :(. Kyle Landrum (Suz) did his version of.the "Comeback" with a pair of efforts anyone would be proud of, riding inches away from the tops of the bowl turns with super C9nsistency. Randy "Fluid Form" Sullivan (Suz) , quick and consiStent as usual, paced hinuelf brilliantly to second as Amarillo's Greg "Go for I.t" Fouts (Yam) took his Yamaha support YZ to a pair of thirds, keeping the parade in . line. California's juan "The One" Benavidez (C-A) was more than fast; 'he was lucky. After starting slowly in each . round, Benavidez came from behind ~th a pair of very impressive wins. Austin's Ricky Blackwell (Yam) was ~ually consistent after early. leader Kirk "The Doughboy" Spencer (Yam) faded in round one and dropped his bike in round two to finish third both times. Fourth overall was WRW's "Too Tough" Tim Butler (Yam) who rides with more confidenc!= each week on the 250. Open Expert action capped off a weekend of exciting racing, and "The Doughboy" rode his Carter's Yamaha support YZ to picture perfect performances. Spencer returned to fonn in the Open event after a less than satisfying ride in 250cc action. Spencer was super, and Nevada's _ . _ . . . . _ .. .. .J Kevin Davis' (Mai) ~-2 effort brought , him to second overall after dueling with Spencer for much 0{ the afternoon. Third was jack Becltham (Mai), who came from a soil sample to finish fourth in round two. Results MINI MICRO: 1. Cody . . . lVomI: 2. Gory S_lVom); 3. 0... St.-lVom). MINI JR: 1. Riden in aU three Pro classes were turning in record lap times, and with the 5Q-minute-plus-two-lap motos, spectators and riders got their money's worth with some change to spare. "Comeback" Kyle Landrum (Suz), ",Reborn" Ricky Blackwell (Yam) and Kevin "Oh Yeah" Davis (Mai) took class wins after two Texas tough rounds of racing. With the weather hovering in the 80s, and the sky as clear as water, round one racing got underway with the 125cc riden movin' dirt. "Magic" Mike Clements (Suz) took the holeshot in round one and continued in flawleu fashion until "Comeback" Kyle eased paued in the middle of lap 19. On the minute ~O circuit, the 125s made 24 laps, and Landrum was out front and on the gas when the checkers came out. "Magic" Mike held on for second as Randy "Fluid Form" Sullivan (Suz) bliued by jerry "Super" Surber (Yam) for third. Ohio'S" Mark Smith (Suz) was out front as the gate hit the ground in round two. Smith began fading as round two wore on with Clements taking over in lap two. Clements charged hard in his bid for the overall before "Fluid Form" made his move on lap 10. Sullivan was untouchable in round two as he paced himIeH brilliantly ahead of the field with overall winner "Comback" Kyle doin' his thing for second as "Magic" Mike held on in third. Open class riden attacked Austin MX's sandy circuit next, and as in past weekends, "Dynamite" Dan Conway (Hon) moved to the early lead only to DNF with bike problems late in the moto. Nevada's Kevin Davis (Mai) was more than happy to take over as he sped by the mechanic's area where Conway's bid for the win ended as Huaky-mounted Mike Bradshaw boogied back for second. Russell Miksch (Mai) won the three·man battle for third as Brian Evans' (HOD) slipped past fifth-place rider john "The Russian" Kolbensvik (Mai) for fourth.. Round two, Bradshaw bouDced .back and appeared to have the overall win in his grasp before suffering mechlmical woes that allowed Davis to take over near the end of lap 18. and he coasted to the overall win. With Bradshaw sidelined, Kolbensvik filled in the secoDd slot after lOlling a chain in round one as Califomia', Mike Monaghan (Hus) overcame the odds for third. The final event was like the main event at a wrestling ~atl:h; not only did all the spectaton stay around to see who took home the big bucks, but, the riden rode as if it was a championship bout. Round one had "Comeback" Kyle wiring the holeshot as a talented field of Pros gave chase. Landrum, hot off his 125cc victory, appeared invincible as the 250cc riden rode at the ragged edge. "Comeback" Kyle's bid for a double win came to an end in the l!lcky ,1fP I}~p? ~~ M ..~~ ..
