Superstreet
victory to Gray at
AFM Sears Point
In the Open GP contest, Kerry Bryant
showed off his new immaculate fullysponsored bike, Red Landis' Warland
Engineering Kawasaki KZl000. He responded by jetting to the win, followed
by Rich Oliver, on Kerry's old Z-l. and
Mike Summen on his TZ750.
The AFM number one plate is still
in doubt, and today's results didn't
clarify anything. BoPt points leader
Louis Vallerga (Palo Alto Yam-lightweight Superstreet) and Kirk Graves
(Palo Alto Yam/Radasich Racing-45Occ
Prod) won their classes, with Wayne
Montoya, John Glover, Frank Mazur
and Howard Monise all within striking
distance.
600cc Box Stock had Frank Mazur
maximizing points at the expense of
Tom Chew. Chew led the fust two
laps, only to be passed by Mazur. "A
dog ran mto me, and I broke my foot
two weeks ago," said Frank, obviously
uncomfortable after his victory but
with humor intact and tongue still
firmly implanted in cheek, as usual.
Joe Montoya (Yam) held off John
Glover (Yam) for third.
An interesting phenomenon is occurring in the AFM. 125 and 250cc GP,
once two of the largest classes in the
club, are suffering from poor particiP!ltion. Reason? The numher one
through nine plates will be awarded to
the top nine points-getten regardless
of c1ass. Formerly, numben one
through five were reserved for the top
five GP riden, with the rest going to
the top four Production riden.
Not considering the presence of
AMA pilots out for a little club
practice, the GP classes are too expensive .for the rest of the club,
the maintenance too costly and timecOlllUJDing, and the gasoline to get
to the races far too pricey. But the
straw that broke the camel's back was
the lack of recognition in the form of a
single-digit plate. More than a few
people have expressed their concerns
about the dog-eat-dog nature of professional racing and its influence on
AFM racing, which is amateur in
nature and friendly and congenial in
spirit.
A quick look at the points standings
shows that nine out of the top 10
poinu leader are in street-based daMes;
only one, Danny Coe, is a GPer, and it
appean that he has withdrawn from
com~ition. Then again, perhaps
credit is fma11y going to the guys and
gals that have supported the club all
along.
The next AFM race is at Laguna
Sea on September 27'. The next race
at Sean Point occun on October 11 .
