After this the mayor of Costa Mesa presented PenhaU with a special award from the city and she also declared Sept. 25 as Bruce Penhall Day. To put a topper on the whole thing a representative from the Orange County Board of Supervisors presented Bruce with a special commendation from the supervisors and Bruce also received a congratulatoty telegram from Governor Jerry Brown. However, in the evening's race, Penhall's good fortune ceased and he failed to make either main event. The first time around the Third Division main ended up in a red flag restart. On the restart Steve Murray got out first and held on to his lead to the finish. However, at the wire Murray almost lost it to Craig Young, who finished within a half a tire length of Murray. The third place honors went to Bob Kellam. In the Second Division main, only Dave Wooten led from the zero yard line to the finish. Mark Weaver who started the race in the third spot and moved up to second on the second lap by going under Jim Turner. On the next lap Cary Faas moved under Turner, as did Tim McCasland, putting Turner into fifth place. McCasland then took third and was challenging for second but they ran out of laps and Weaver took the runner-up spot. The Flrst Division Handicap main event saw Dave Miller, starting on the 20. lead from start to flnisb. Leni Faas took second after riding most of the race in that position. Finishing third was Bobby McLair, who held off the challenging duo of Mike Bast and Mike Curoso. Curoso moved. into fourth place on the third lap, relegating Bast to ruth and Gene Woods to sixth. The Scratch consolation was the last time for fans to see Penhall race, this year except for the Oct. 10 U.S. Nationals. The last race of the night for the "champ" was met with another fabulous ovation. Penhall was in lane two next to Steve Luceronin lane one and Dave Sims in lane three. Outside in lane four was Steve Bast. Penhall was first into tum one, and he remained there the entire race. Lucero came out second but on lap two Sims moved underneath to take over the second spot: On the next lap Bast moved under Lucero as well and pushed him into the number four position. When the gate went up in the Scratch main, Alan Christian and Mike Bast were in tum one together. Christian came out in front and on the next lap, Mike Curoso was challenging Bast for second. On lap three Curoso cleanly moved into the number two spot. That was the only position change and that. was how the last regular season Scratch main finished: Christian, Curoso, Bast and Gene Woods. The final race of the night was the Skoal match race: Christian vs. Miller. Miller had a 20 yard head start and it was too great a head start for Christian to overcome. Miller took the win and Christian was second. The overall Skoal winner for the season was Mike Curoso. The next speedway race will be the U.S. National on Oct. 10. The title is on the line as World Champion and defending National Champ Penhall must defend his title against the likes of Mike Bast, Alan Christian, Lance King, Bobby Schwartz and others. • -17
