AMA Grand National Championship/Winston Pro Series: Round 25 Brow takes tumultuous San Jose Mile; Kidd, Gary Scott tie for point lead By Dele Brown Photos by E. W. Dominie end Brown SAN JOSE, CA, SEPT. 20 The battle for victory at the San Jose Mile National, usually involving five riders at a time, ended when Garth Brow was in front to take the checkered flag first. Bqt when Mike Kidd's 6 late race surge pushed him up to third and a slowing motor , . dropped Gary Scott to eighth, the two wound up tied for the AMA/Winston Pro Series point lead with 184 apiece. .With one round remaini~g, the half m,~e at Ascot, Scott and K,dd have 18 pomts on Randy Goss, who sprang an oil leak in his heat race failed to heed a black flag and was msqualified. With the winner receiving 20 points, Goss remains in mathematical contention. This was the kind of race that has made SanJose a legend. The batde for the lead was fast and furious, with the order changi~ from comer to comer, straight to stTalght, as drafting and the slingshot pass became the order of the day. Eventually Hank Scott came up through the raw to finish second ahead of Kidd. Scott Parker, who led several laps, was fourth at the line. A capacity crowd at the Bob Barlthimerpromoted event took it all in. Syracuse Mile winner Jay Springsteen did not compete after a Sunday morning reoccurrence of his diabetes left him sick to his stomach. He was reportedly taken to San Jose Hospital for observation. His factory Harley was ridden by Brow, who made it two National wins in a row for tuner Bill Werner. TImatrials Scott Parker made it two weeks in a row as fast qualifier when he took his Ted Peel XR around the circuit in 57.004 seconds. That was easily the best time, with Brow next at 57.611. Brow was followed by San Jose's Scott Pearson (57.709) and Alex Jorgensen (57.902). The three contenden, Gary Scott, Kidd and Goss, all qualified inside the top 10. Cut -off time was 41.759. Huts The ftrSt heat produced not only three transfen to the National, but hot tempen and controveny as well. After Scott Parker had pulled the holeshot ahead of Willie Crabbe and Gary Scott, Goss pulled up into second. But his machine was smoking badly, and the oil from a broken line soon coated not only Scott, but fourth place runner Wayne Rainey as well. On the sixth lap, Goss received the blaCK flag, but he continued to run on the track. Parker was well out front, and late in the race Scott passed Goss for second. The batde for third - with Goss' disqualification - got very intense in the final laps as Rainey, Honda's Freddie Spencer and Willie Crabbe ran nose to tail. Rainey came up with the tranafer after taking a lot of prellUre from behind. After they took the checkered flag, a 1IeJ'}' ~tarec:t Gary Scott rode alongside eo. tbrougb tum one, shaking his fist. As they came into the pits, there were hanh words between GoA and the Scott brothen, Gary and Hank, and a scume almost broke out. At day's end, there were still hard feelings. The second heat went off with Ricky Graham shooting into the lead ahead of Brow and Steve Eklund. It soon became a four· rider batde as Lance Jones joined the front·running trio on lap four. By that time Brow had taken over possession of ftrlt after Eklund had one go at it. Graham soon found himself dropping back as Eklund and Jones setded themselves into the 2-5 slots. Two laps before the finish Jones passed Eklund and the top three were set. Steve Monger got around Graham to place fourth. The third heat gave an indication of what was to happen in the National. Scott Pearson took his customary holeshot, towing Terry Poovey and Rob Crabbe behind him. Bubba Rush quickly took Crabbe for third. but it wasn't long before Hank Scott displaced Rush. The top three were soon at the draft and pass game, with the leader at one end of the track finding himself second or third at the other end. Going into the last lap, Pearson was leading with Scott second and Poovey third. Scott and Poovey hoth set up for a move through the fmal cornen and straight and they both made it barely. In a near photo finish, Scott took the win, Poovey was second and Peanon third. Wen back from the leaden, ,Rush finished fourth. The second heat saw Mike Kidd taking the initial lead on the Lawwill· Roberts Racing Harley. Top start honon, however, went. to Ted Boody, who took his NS750 Honda from the second row to second through the first comer, followed by Alex Jorgensen.
