Mills and Pieper take all in Denver By Sam Slideways DENVER, co, SEPT. 11 Proving to be a night filled with many upsets, tonight's racing at the Western Stock Show Arena began on a farnilar note with 24 Hannum winning his Handicap heat. From the moment the tapes went up for the second heat race, the racing was totally unpredictable. . The Division Two main was a survivor's race as those who staned and stayed up to finish placed. As in the past, it was Rusty Haflet putting on a fine ride for a wire-to-wire win. By the time the Division One mains rolled around, people like Scott Ormiston, Dave Pieper and othen were eliminated, allowing some fresh names into the mains. Lining up for the Handicap main on the 20-yard line was Rutledge "Putt" Mills. MJlking up the !1O-yard line was Rick Steele and Dan Weigum. A crowd showed up for the 40; it was Mark Borgman, Mike Golightly and Rusty Hannum. Mter an exciting first lap, Mills had the lead with Weigum in second and Hannum pushing hard in third. Hannum was pushing so hard, in fact, that on the second lap, he had to duck into the infield to avoid hitting a parked Weigum. This save did him little good as he lowsided in the very next comer, allowing Golightly to move in and try Weiglim. Meanwhile, Mills had managed to hang on. and develop a slight lead over Weigum. At the checkered flag, it was "Putt" Mills (a real veteran at 57 years old) scoring his fint main event win of the season. The Scratch main was definitely a lineup for a real bot race with Ken Pieper, Mark Borgman and Larry Methcrd. Also making the main was last year's number one plate holder, Chris Reichardt. Chris just returned from a trip to the west coast, and while. out on the coast, Reichardt managed to score on of the slickest bikes around, one of the new Godden machines. When the tapes went up, it was Metherd getting the holeshot with Reichardt and Peiper in his back pocket. Coming in from the outside, it was Borgman trying real hard, though his effons were wasted as he had his front wheel taken out by someone. Metherd and Reichardt began a real battle for the lead with Pieper dropping back 'a little due to an injured knee. On lap two, Metherd got too far sideways and parked it in tum four. With Reichardt so close, a crash was bound to happen. It did, putting them both out of the race. Pieper, who was the only rider left upright, rode on to the most controvenial win of the season. The King of the Hill match race saw challenger Chris Reichardt on his new Godden going up against Bryan "Hot Dog" Hoel on his old, and we mean old, J.A.P. This race was another of the night's upsets as Hoel got the stan and held on, not allowing Reichardt any chance. This makes the second week Hoel has been the King of the Hill. What kind of machine ~ it going to take to beat theJ.A.P? As a closing note, Colorado speedway riders have one thing to say to the new World Individual Speedway Champion, Bruce PenhalI - congratulationsl And we all knew you could do it. Results SECOND DIV: 1. RuotY Hoflet; 2. Jock Pieper; 3. DlMI McMillen. SCRATCH MAIN: 1. Ken Pieper. HANDICAP MAIN: 1. "Putt" Mill.; 2. D.n Wtrigum; 3. Mik. Golightly; 4. Riel< SI_: 5. Mort< Ba
