TEN YEARS ...... AGO 00 0') ...... The U.S. World Trophy team really raised eyebrows at the '71 ISnT held on the Isle of Man. They wound up the event tied for fourth with Holland behind the winners, Czechoslovakia, and runners-up West Germany and East Germany. Of the 32-man U.S. contingent, 20 finished, all on gold or silver. The gold medal winners were Jack Penton, Gene Cannady, Tom Penton, Dane Leimbach, Lan LanlIOn, Dave Mun~nast, Charles Vincent, Malcolm Smith, Ron Webster, David Lathem and Ed Schmidt. The records fell at Ascot Park with the winners of both feature events at the half mile National running under the previous bests for the track. A pair of youngsters put it to the veterans in the National, as Triumph riders Tom Rockwood and John Hateley finished 1-2. Dick Mann (BSA) finished sixth to pad his points lead after Gene Romero crashed in his heat race and failed to transfer. In the Junior race, Kenny Roberts (Yam) also lowered the track record, as he survived the charges of Ron Moore en route to the win. Profiled in the pages of Cycle News was Kerry KIeid, a motocr05seT who became the first female to hold an AMA Pro competition license. In the annual Race of the Year in England, run at the time at Mallory Park, John Cooper beat the favored Giacomo Agostini. It was the first time, according to the report, that Agostini and his MV Augusta had been beaten since Mike Hailwood and Honda left racing in 1967. The Trans-AMA Motocross Series moved to Boise, In, and CZ-mounted Gaston Rahier was the International class winner, defeating Husky's Torlief Hansen. At sixth overall Bill Clements (Hus) edged out Brad Lackey (CZ) for top American honors. Pat Evans took a trio of Yamahas to three wins at the ACA's road race at Carlsbad Raceway, carding the 200, 250 and 350cc GP classes. If that wasn't enough, Evans also rode a Kawasaki to victory in the 250cc Production class-. Kerker: The Superbike Road Racing Leader "I waited until the last lap, then I just gassed it right around him!" Overpoweringly simple. That's how team Kerker-Kawawaski's Eddie Lawson and the lone Kerker KR Series equipped Superbike walked away . from the motorcycling masses at Seattle 'International Raceway, extending his AMA Superbike Series lead. Mike Meyen and Hank Scott followed the two leaders across the finish line. Dick Poppaff rode his Honda 750 from Canada down to Mexico in record time, setting a new mark of 22 hours, 22 minutes and 30 seconds. His av.erage speed was a then legal 64 mph. Young Californian Larry Watkins won the Canadian National 125cc MX Championship. For his achievement. the Canadian government awarded him a gold medal - the British Columbia Centennial Award, given only every 100 years to outstanding athletes ofthe day. • 21
