But the Las Cruces rider went hilth on the fifth lap in the same tum hebad pressured Dulany and lost valuable ground. Meanwhile, Dulany wasn't about to let Wofford calte·wallt the main. He pushed his Yamaha tight behind Wofford on the second tap and kept it there until the final lap. where The Move was attempted. Coming out of the last tum for the checkered Dulany was making an efron, but Wofford kept it together and crossed the line first with Armitage a fading third. 00 C') ~ 0 QC") .... Aside from the regular motocross races, the program included classes consisting of two on a bike, father and son, and husband and wife. Also, each panicipant in any event received a Conroe MX Park T -shin. The morning half of the split program ran smoothly. despite three quarters of the track being under water the day before. It drained offfor race day and left only a couple of mucky spots, one of which was getting impassible. so the track was rerouted around it. Before the afternoon program stan· ed, the special races were run. Riders had a few practice laps, and they tried to get used to the extra weight of a rider on the bike with them. Richie Hull and his partner Chuck looked right a t home as they crossed over jumps and went around comers with little difficulty. Others were not so comfortable as feet went flying in all directions, and some played it safe by putting around the track cautiously. The first event was the ta~ team race combining the husband/wife and father/son teams. There were eight teams altogether. The riders chose who they wanted to stan fmt, and the other rider waited by the fmish line where they would either change riders on the same bike or tag hands if they rode separate bikes. Each rider rode two laps apiece. A.C. Bennett adopted Kevin Wooten as his son for the race. They made a good pair and switched off of Bennett's Huaky with no problems, taking first place. Next came the comical race with two on a bike. The practice Richie and Chuck did paid off as they stole the holeshot and literally flew around the track on Richie's Yamaha 125. Even the duo of Slade Putman (driver) and David MiIcic:h (nawiptor) c:ouIdn't catch them on his 450 HUIky. HOlftftT. they did manage to move up from founh place tos econd and passed Mark and Grady by the double jumps. Slade told David, "Hang on, buddy, we are in founb place, and we're gonna haul alii" After an intermission, the 12See Intermediate class was on the staning line. Richie Hull got the holeshot fol· lowed closely by Jerry LaBlanc. These two separated themselves from the reo maining group early in the race and got funher away in the finishing laps. LaBlanc never closed in enough to execute a pass on Hull. Hull took the holeshot the second time around and was determined to complete the race in first. His lead was not comfonable enough, however. as LaBlance overcame him after the double jump and poured it on through the sandy "S" tum leaving Hull to grope in second. . Walter Rasmusson was being tailgated by Scott Highland in the 250 and Open Intermediate class after he was the first one to the comer off the staning line. Slade Putman was running in third several bikelengths from High. land, and Phillip Niccom was in founh. Niccom had just rounded the uphill tum by the sycamore tree and come down the other side when he got out of shape and flipped the bike in a sandy sechon narrowly missing a pole . on the side of the track. This happened on the third lap, and nearly everyone passed him. He was not able to make up the lost time_ It was at this very same spot just two laps later that Highland tried a dangerous pass around Rasmusson and took him on the outside of the sand tum. He gained a long lead on RasmUSlOD after that and kept it to the fmish line. Besides the front-of-the-pack action, Billy Click and Putman were having it out. Putman passed Click, and DOt half a lap later Click passed him back on the straight back stretch. Putman immediately returned the favor. Earlier while Putman was trailing him, Click went high in a sandy berm and tried to cut Putman off, but his back end washed out and he did a 180 out into the woods. Putman said later, "Click. I thought you had decided to tum the race into a hare scrambles when I saw you in the woods." Click replied, "The bike was on when I fell.down, but as soon as I reached for the clutch, it went dead." Moto two found Niccom out front recovered from his spill earlier followed by Rasmusson. Niccom looked really good, but Rasmusson was more than ready to beat him. On the third lap, he did just that by passing him after the double jumps. Highland didn't have his KODIes on and got din in his eyes, andnequickly found himself in last place. He rode extremely well up through the ranks to gain founh place by the sixth lap. He ran into the back of a downed rider in the familiar spot of the other crashes but lost only a small amount of time commanding second overall. • Results MINI _IIMINI JR: 1. lleWI CIIrtt; 2.
