How anyone could rest while the Open Pro riders bent it back is'still a mystery. In round one, "Dynamite" Dan Conway piloted his big bore "red rocket" to the lead, looking like a sure winner. However, with only three laP.' remaining, Conway's engine faIled, allowing Scooter Bates ~Yam) to take the lead and what appeared to be a sure win. Bates took a soil sample with less than two laps remaining, though, and San Antonio's Mike Bradshaw (Hus) inherited the lead and round one win. Bates bounced back for second as Maby "Mabyso" Mcintyre (Yam) came from behind for third. El Paso's Mcintyre moved his Yamaha support "yellow bird" to the head of the class in round two as early leader David Stutts (Yam) faded to third behind a charging Kevin Davis (Mai). Fourth in round two was round one winner Bradshaw who held off Dallas Maico's John Kolbensvik.. Overall, it was Mcintyre, Bradshaw, Stutts, Kolbensvik., California's Mike Monoghan (Hus) and Nevada's Davis. The day's racing ended as spectacularly as it began with "Dynamite" Dan exploding for a pair of victories in 250cc Pro action. Conway led a Houstonian sweep in round one as "Comeback" Kyle Landrum (Suz) finished a close second ahead of pavid McClain (Hon). Conway's win was gate to flag as Landrum moved from a fourth place start to take second ahead of McClain and his fifth place start. In round two the action got very intense as Conway took the holeshot 'ahead of a very hungry group of riders. "Dynamite" Dan dusted the plows of his competitors with heavy pressure coming from Landrum. Landrum's bid for the overall was crushed with his pipe when he and McClain collided in a bowl turn, and the rest is history. Conway breezed to the overall as "Radical" Ricky Glazer (Yam) battled back for second in "Texas tough" round two. Michigan's "Dynamic" Dan Wallace (Suz) Full Floated his way to third ahead of WRW's Tim Butler (Yam). Overall, it was Conway, Glazer, McClain, Duncanville's Kirk Dillon (Yam), Butler, Willie Phee (Hus) and San Antonio's Joey Balcom (Hus). Narramore runs amuk at La Luz ST By Douglas Hanson LA LUZ, NM, SEPT. 12 Reading the results from any short track race Silver City. NM rider Jeff Narramore enten. one would assume he rides against senile old men with terminal hemorrhoids. If be did, then comprehending his domination of the 250cc and Open Expert classes would come easy. But some fast company races with Narramore around ovals throughout the Southwest. At the La Luz Speedway short track races tonight, for example. Narramore was pitted against some of the fastest racers in the area. But Narramore simply outrode them tonight. From the heats through the trophy dashes to the main events, the CVE Machine-sponsored Narramore ran amuk and won everything he touched. He is considered a favorite in the State Championship races scheduled for Sept. 26 at La Luz and with good reason. Narramore's only apparent effort during the night came in the Open Expert main. He was third through the first turn behind Triumph-mounted Randy Waldrop and leader Lome Wofford. By the start of the second lap, Waldrop was behind Narramore. who now set his sights on Wofford and his Yamaha. Coming out of turn four at the end of the second lap, Narramore simply. and cleanly, drove inside and on-the-gas Wofford for first and never looked back. It was as easy as that. No muss, no fuss. And the 250cc Expert main was no different, except here Narramore had the lead from minute one. But while he was racing his shadow, the rest of the 250cc Experts were beginning to piece together one of the wildest races of the season. Waldrop, on his Yamaha, had second at the start followed by Dion Dulany and Danny Haney. The rest of the nine-rider pack was settling in for a race: Six bikes jammed into a space that would comfortably hold three; two riders flat on the tanks and drafting for that extra, vital 10th of a mile an hour down the straight, then sticking a wheel inside trying to scare the man in front off his line. At the end of the first lap, coming out of turn four, Dulany passed Waldrop for second. Dulany held it down the front straight, but when the two reached the middle of turn one, Waldrop pulled alongside of Dulany, staying there for one of those eternal moments, the two side by side at racing speed, and Waldrop began to drift to the outside. Dulany thought fast, deciding it was wise'r to give up his line and try to pull in behind Waldrop for a lock on third - and another shot at second spot rather than using the plywood track boards as a surrogate berm and blowing it totally for the night. But while these boys were doing their dance, Haney snuck his Honda into second slot and millted the motor for all it had. By the start of the third circuit, it was Haney-WaldropWofford-Dulany (Dulany having lost .two places during his recovery), and the four freight-trained around, behind Narramore, until the seventh lap when Dulany drove around Wofford for fourth and Waldrop dropped Haney to third. But Haney was taking no wolf ticIr.ets this night. He pulled alongside Waldrop down the straight immediately after the pass, tucked in and trying. The Lubbock rider, however, didn't have the hot line into tum one, and the Atomik Kawasaki-sponsored Waldrop retained his position. By the eighth lap, the night's main results were revealed, with Narramore chasing butterflies in first, and Waldrop-Haney-Dulany chasing each other to the finish. Lome Wofford, the Yamaha of Alamogordo rider, would have his turn at leading during the 125cc Expert main. He leaped his scooter into the tum first with Dulany's Yamaha and Las Cruces, NM rider Ryan Armitage hot on his tail. Armitage pressed his Suzuki closer to the two, pulling alongside Alamogordo Harley- .. This is the Kawasaki you take when you're headed for the water.
