He went sideways once and this allowed Pierce to gain a few feet and on the next lap Pierce passed him. Overall it was Pierce, Cline, Shawn Bates, Tony Mercier and Wade Gatlin. By Maureen Lee ORANGE, CA, SEPT. 15 CMC Ascot demo derby to Page By Tom Corley GARDENA, CA, SEPT. 10 From a spectator's point of view, the Junior riders are always the craziest, offering the grandstand crowd the best in crash 'n' bum action. This night, however, fans at Ascot Park were surprised to see the 125cc Pros play demolition derby. Glenn Page emerged the winner after sharpening up on his bike dodging sIr.ills. John Chwastyk had the entire pack after him in the first moto with Craig Westergaard the cloeest. Several riders bit the ground from behind but nobody expected the two leaders to have any problem. Then as they turned the comer before the finish, Chwastyk toolr. a tumble and Westergaard then flipped over him. That toolr. care of thOle two but the derby had just begun. New contestant Eric Coffm couldn't avoid the downed riders and he spilled his machine. RIDI Wageman had the conta~ous crash fever and he keeled over m front of the score keepers. Page dodged to the left and also to the right and took over first place. Tim Lunde and ROIl Maeda advanced to second and third. The sailing was smoother in the final moto but it was similar in that Page played the hero's role once more. Wagmlan came back real strong and he was second ahead of Lunde and Chwutyk. Overall, it was Page, Lunde, Chwastyk, ROIl Maeda and Mike Niahita. Sean Gilboy is one of the faster 125cc Intermediate riders but he takes his share of falla. This time Sean looIr.ed smooth and proved it as he won both motos. John McNulty and Mike Lentini followed the 125cc Pros' example in the first moto and they collided with one another. Larry. Bohlken and Darin Motocla placed second aDd third in that contest. , R....1ts so ' .. 80.,. AannIo 80 INT: 1.51.- _ ~ CSoaI;3. ~_lY'" lMDd. lYon: 2. _ AndoI-. lYon: 2. ........... 80 JR DIY 1: 1. Alesai took his Kawasaki to win the 80cc Stock and Modified Intermediate clasaea. Alessi's only competition came from Kyle Lewis who was second in the Modified race. It was a big night for little Jason BilJBl. He took the fint place Pee Wee honon with a 1-2 tally over Jesse James, who had a bad first moto but won the fmal moto. James was second overall and Kevin Billen took third over Italjet rider Damon Huffman. Alan Pierce battled T&O Yamaha rider Troy C~ in the 80cc Stock Be· ginner 9-II event and came out as the winDer. He had to work for it in the The Lightweights had a fast "blue groove" track for their AMA D-37 short track, and it took a little time for some of the riders to figure out haw to get the traction on the ground, but a good time was had by all. The race of the day had to be the 250cc Money class. Roger Thompson won the fint heat over Jimmy Rosa, Mike Kirby and Dorothy Rowe. The second heat went to Bud Carroll over Steve Karsten and Curtis ~nnon. Cannon is the new 125cc National Amateur TT Champion, and with him and older brother Chris, District 57 is coming along with another pair of brothers to take over when the Scotts, Gary and Hank, get tired of the war. In the main, Thompson unloaded on lap three, so they had a single file restan. They all rode very hard and fut, with Carroll coming up with the win over Kirby and Rosa. Rosa ended the day as top money winner. In the 500cc Money class he posted a 2-5-1 which gave him the overall win and the top money plus what he won for third in the 250cc class. Second in the class wu Bob Sanders (3-1·3), and third was Tommy Walton (1-7-2). That seventh place came about when he got into a tank slapper after bum~ing into Sanders, and suffered the kind of pain you're too embarrased to grab at when there's a crowd watching! The Senior class was ably represented, but as they lined up for the fmt moto, one Lightweight member going by looked down into the track bowl and said, "My God, what's that monster down there?" It looked liIr.e one too, a big red ~n·Am, all set up for enduros with Ir.nobbies and all, ridden by Horst Leitner. We're happy to write that Hont made it all three times out intact. On a sleeker machine • it was Ken Barrow who couldn't stay upright. Mike Morse won the cI. . via a 1-3- I score with Dennis Pinheiro (31-2) second. Curtis ~nnon again won the 125cc class, which left Brian Barrick and Brian Runyan to son out secoDd and third. In the 250cc Amateur/Expen cIaJs the same old faces were up &ont but no one made a clean sweep of it. Bud Carroll was first with a 1-1-2, then Roger Thompson (5-3-1) and Cunis Cannon (2-2-5). Mark your calenders up now: the Lightweights will throw a half mile at Ascot Oct. 16, so if you've never ridden the daddy of all half miles and want to feel pan of the Ascot legend, here's your chance. Then Nov. 1 and 8, they'll go with TTs on the I-o-n-g course, so check for appropriate gearing. Results MiNt COMBO: 1. Brion _ !Yom!; 2. Mm SIDUl8nIlurll CSuzI; 3. - . Iloylo !Yom!. 125 COMBO: 1. In moto one Tripes gassed his Yamaha into the holeshot over Meyer, Jon Faure, Terry Murray and Joaquin Picazo. Meyer diced with Tripes for the lead on lap two, passing Tripes once, but being repassed a few turns later. After Tripes regained his lead there was no stopping him as he increased his lead over Meyer on every lap. In the second moto Meyer took the holeshot ahead of Faure, Tripes, Nolin, Picazo and Murray. All of the riden stayed within four bikelengths of each other for the first three laps. Then Meyer, Faure and Tripes pulled away from the rest of the pack as they battled for the lead. Tripes was trying to pass Faure in every tum, but Faure held him off. When the one lap flag came out Meyer was leading by three bilr.e1engtha as Tripes passed Faure with one lap to go. Tripes caught Meyer halfway through the last lap, but Meyer held him off to take the overall. Tripes finished three seconds ahead of Faure. Faure took third over· all in a four way tie-breaker with Nolin, Picazo and Murray. The 125cc Junion were run in two divisions, with Bobby Maupin taking the fim and Shannon Scott the second.
