.-4 00 (j') .-4 No, Mark Barnett did not ride his 125 to a 1-2 second overall. Due-to a foul-up with the airlines, our film from Mid-Ohio didn't arrive: thus, file photos. caught up to Glover and used a poweron charge that took him past Glover, moving Broc over a few feet in the process. The pair held it to the stops through the final turns with Barnett edging a wheel ahead past the checkered flag. Hannah came in one minute, 15 seconds back from Barnett and Glover, with another cushion between Hannah and Hansen, who had nipped Bell in the late stages of the race_ Smith, Bailey and Honda's Steve Wise were next. "That was great. Broc and I always put on a show; we did it for three years (in the 125cc Nationals). It was definitely a drag race to the finish. I didn't know how fast I had to go. I think Broc was going as fast as he could, and I can still go faster." "It's startling to have someone come up on you 10 miles per hour faster with a drive going, but I had to shut off, " said Glover pertaining to Barnett's pass. "Mark is no dumb rider; he knew where his lines were." Barnett took Glover in tow off the line in moto two with Shul~z, Smith, Martin, Husky's Mike Guerra and Hannah in pursuit. A short way into the bout, Barnett went down in a turn. He didn't get to the brakes in time and completely overshot the corner, then crashed. Glover' took off to build a quick lead, but the race was far from over for Broc. The rubber strap broke that held the YEIS (Yamaha Energy Induction System) box to Broc's bike's frame. It was dangling, and if the line broke that was holding it, instant seizure was inevitable. All that was keeping the box from going away was 'a small hose clamp holding the line, and Glover tenderly' cradling the box in the arch of his foot. Barnett was .up and back at it in second, but Mark wasn't at 100 percent either. His Suzuki's shock reservoir had broken free in the crash and was slipping off the swingarm and frame, The two leaders were showing the way with bikes that could come to a stop at any moment. "There are too many things hanging off the bikes now days," said Honda's Roger DeCoster, five-time MX World Champion. "There are other ways of doing things." Behind Barnett, Shultz was smoothing things out in third with Hannah taking fourth after a prolonged dice with Guerra. Bell was sixth with a mass of riders led by Martin, Bentley and Smith following. Glover never missed a beat and . cruised in with a win, his YEIS box hanging on until the end. Barnett came in 40 seconds back with sore kidneys after taking a thrashing from his near non-performing rear shock. Shultz was a close third, and from there it was a long ways to fourth place Hannah followed by Bell, who snuck in front of Guerra for fifth. Honda's Jim Gibson and Smith rounded out the top eight. "That box came off about 15 minutes into the moto, and I was praying it wouldn't go into the chain," said Glover, "1 was trying to hold the thing with my foot when I was cornering - I felt like a dummy. I can't believe it held, it has too much mass. Early in the r-ace Barnett completely missed the brake and missed a turn. I almost rammed him getting around." "I spun out, and when I picked up the bike, the front brake lever was tweaked, and I couldn't use the brake. A hole got punched in the shock line, and there was no oil in it. I didn't even know it until I came in. No excuses, though, it's hard to catch up once you screw up, said Barnett. "Guerra hung me up for a while, everywhere I went he was there. One more lap of that, and I was going to do something, but then I thought that if I did, I'd be the bad guy. I got by anyway," said Hannah. ''I'm pretty pumped, I feel pretty good about how I rode," said Bell. If SOOcc Support A c~mpletely new Denny "Magoo" Chandler took control of both Support class motos and ran to unchallenged wins. Chandler used to be known for his spectacular crashes, but his new style is smooth and very fast. Chandler came to Mid-Ohio with a new sponsor and a new brand and displacement bike. "It didn't look like I was going to get any help from Suzuki next year (Chandler rode the 125cc Nationals on a Suzuki this season) and all of a sudden LOP called me and offered me expenses. I don't know if I'm going any faster than before, but I'm keeping it on two wheels," said Chandler. . LOP is using Hondas this time around, and the new 480R models work. Chandler took his to an early lead in moto one with Moto-X Fox Honda support rider 10 Jo Keller, Yamaha-supported Gary Easton and Keystone Motocross Works rider Jeff Hicks next. Hicks looked at home on his new Yamaha 465. Chandler made few mistakes the entire moto, twisting it off the jumps a bit in the late stages of the race. Hicks took Keller for second after a long pacing session. LOP's Mike Brown moved into third late in the race, also on a production '82 Honda. Yamaha Pro Support rider Arlo Englund moved to fourth and challenged Brown for the position, but fell short at the finish. Keller finished sixth with Maico's Denny Swartz and Honda support rider Larry Wosick going finish when Darren collided in mid-air with Honda rider Rich Coon. Coon went 'in for second, Hicks third, and Rhoten dropped" to 20th after recovering from his fall. Wosick, Swartz, Husky's Bill Grossi,- who put in a hard ride from the back - KTM Keystone rider Andy Stacy and Englund filled the top positions. Hicks 2-3 day gave him second overall, which prompted him to take a leave of absence from his job and do the whole Trans-USA Series. "The Yamaha works well - it's fast, and I'm ready. Consistent rides are what I'm after. I've been bustin' my butt since Unadilla for this," said Hicks. • Results 250 INTERNATIONAL: 1. Broc Glove< IYaml 2-1; 2. Mark Bamatt Isuzl 1-2; 3.
