INFO: (213) 671·9067 LAS VEGAS, NV Las Vegas is our town and one Sunday having nowhere to go, we boarded the old Harley and headed west. Not far into the ride we spotted a new, and somewhat unusual pile of dirt, somewhat resembling a race course with little "bugs" sc~mpering L_ b' . di d across tue: com lDatlO n an hard surface. BOX 1887, BOWUNG GREEN, KENTUCKY 42101 !i02fI43.4687 or 782·2734. find out what this weird course, with motorized bugs chasing each other around a mini off·road track, was all about. In the parking area we were greeted by an otninous painted desen iIIustra· tions of an imposing sand dune with "Dare the Dune" emblazoned across the skyline. We went in to inquire about who, what, when and where and talked to Earl Brookner, one of the in· veston, pannen and innovator of this idea. Daring the dune is an off· road con· temporary to the popular formula car· inspired, race against the clock Malibu GraDd Prix. The D!ain.diffcrences are the race which IS a totally ofT· road course mstead of a paved track, aDd you race ~inst the elements in. stead of a lap tlDler. The can are de· signed to withstand the long houn of punishment of the local "Squidleys." They cost around 15,000 to build and are more or less designed after Mint 400 desert racen with the exception of the power plant. They use Honda 10 honepower engines and so far the only problem has been occasionally shearing rear axle drive keys. Newly designed axles are on the way, but there are plenty of can on the line for all comen. Brookner says these cars will be on the market for sale to the public at a later date. Getting behind the wheel of one of these Odyssey·like racers is a real blast! uac:Jt, Everyone should try it, especially if you have racing in your veins. At the track assistant's signal, you carefully ease out onto the race track through some easy switch·backs to the "Dune." You have a choice - "Dare the Dune:' an intimidating, 20 foot, choppy, rocky pile of desen (not recommended on your ftrst lap!) or you can take the "chicken esses" - a son of sissy squiggle of gravel around the dune's base. Next, you travene eight tenths of a mile through all kinds of ofT·road obstacles including water Cl'OllIing, flat· out whoops, super berms, off camben, rocks and sandwashes. All kinds of fun! After the fint couple of turns you gas it, pretending you are Rick Mean. Amazing bow much you can get pumped in two minutes in the dust and 100 degree Las Vegas heat! The lap record is one minute, 49 seconds. Too soon the money runs out, but as you disengage yourself from your small cage, you vow that come next payday you'll buy a couple of six packs and give it another try. To fiDd this wonder of the desen go west on Charleston toward Red Rock aDd Old Nevada (Bonnie Springs) aDd about one half mile past Rainbow, and it jump' out at you. The total dis· tance from downtown Vegas is about 10 miles. The track is on a 10 acre lot and is open weeltdays from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. and weekends from 10 a.m. to II p.m. Lighting is furnished by the can themselves. Just think - Mint 400 style night racing for only $2.50 per lapl What a deal! There is plenty of parking. Helmets are furnished, but if you have your own, bring it. Don't come in your church clothes - they might get a bit dusty. There is a shaded area trackside with cool drinks and plenty of space invaders games inside while you are waiting for your next ride. Darinjt the dunes is really a fun experience for all ages and both sexes the only requirement is you must be at least four feet 11 inches tall and dig ofT-road excitement. - •
