Five hundred ninety-two entries were posted for the sixth annual AMA Youth MX National Championship final held at Rolling Hills Cycle Park in Reidsville, NC, on Aug. 29-S0. Due to the record number of entries accepted, a four moto per class format was used rather than the usual two motos per class. Good conditions held until Sunday afternoon when a downpour turned the course to slop, making it almost impossible for the smaller displacment bikes. Class winnen were: Hank Moree (Yam) 51cc, Ronnie Tichenor (Yam) 65cc and S5cc Modified 7-11, William Surratt (Kaw) S5cc Stock 7-11, Tom Wickham (Kaw) S5cc Stock 12-14, Randy Jones (Kaw) S5cc Modified 12-14, Ron Lechien (Yam) lOOcc and Keith Bowen (Yam) 125cc. The field included top South American, U.S. and European riden, and when it was over Yamahariding Californian Rick Johnson was the overall winner with a S-2 score. Rumon filled the air in the southern California motocross world over the weekend about Kawasaki dropping its motocross team. Not so, said Kawasaki Public Relations Director Ron Lovil. "It's not true. We are not cancelling the motocross team. We are just not racing the Trans-USA series. The reason for that is that the new bikes we were expecting will not arrive in time."
