prrssurr on all day. Simmons and his
KX werr quick off the linr, giving him
the fint moto lead ahead of David
Stutts (Yam) of San Antonio and
Memphis, TN rider Bubba Wilson
(Hon). By the second lap, though,
Nielsen paucd into second and spent
the rest of the race closing the gap on
Simmons, who was but a bikelength
ahead at the finish.
The final began like a rrplay of the
fmt round, but this time, Nidsen was
knocking on Simmons' door at the
halfway point. With .two . laps to ~,
Nielsen took a low hne In the WIde
sweeper across from the scoring t~er
while Simmons stayed on the outsIde.
Coming out of the turn, their lines
crossed and all you could see were
arms, legs and wheels as they collided
and went down hard. Simmons was up
and going quickly, and Nielsen re·
. started seconds later, only to fall again
toward the end trying to catch the
fleeing Cajun. Stutts got by then to
finish second in the moto and overlll
at 3-2, ahead of Nidsen's 2-3. After
the racr, Simmons went in to he checked out for pain and discoloration in
the shoulder area. It's likely that he
rode' ~e last lap and a half with a
broken collarbone!
