the country. From a selfish standpoint. we would like to see a national promoted IOmewhere in the central part of the country since all previous races have been hdd in California and it is a long and expensive trek for those in the East and Midwest. Surely this industry can support such a worthy project and not let women's racing die. co c:n SCOlTHOLMAN Katy. The date is Oct. 25. at Templeton Park. just north of San Luis Obispo. The contest will be held in conjunction with the Los Padres Poker Run. organized by the Central Coast Motorcycle Association. Individual entranu will compete for $600 in prize money, and the Industry Class winner will receive the premier award of a perpetuaJ trophy. We plan to make this event the annual national showcase for energy conservation through motorcycling. Interest among the motorcycle manufacturers is running high. We expect to have many of their new models on display, plus several highmileage vehicles from independent builders. The Craig Vetter Streamliner will malr.e iu debut exhibi· tion run. The post-run festivities will include music and a Santa Maria style barbecue. Entries will be limited. For more info please contact Paul Golde 805/544-9500 or Tod Rafferty 805/ 458-5548. PAUL PETERSON President. CCMA San Luis Obispo, CA Thanks, Vicki 1m a motocrou rider from northern California. Lut year I participated in the Women's National at Carilbad, CA. The race was well run. The track wu in good shape, as good as ~rilbad can be. It compared with the most well run of any men's race. I was planning on going again this year, until we received a phone call from Viclr.i Miller Haag telling us the race was cancelled; the reasons being sponsors that backed out and a small pre·entry. Vicki Haag has put on the race for the past several years. She. her husband Rick, and Butch and Peggy Lee have done a lot of work each time trying to put on a successful race. Thaw to Vicki women's motocross has grown a lot. I don't think enough of us appreciated what we had until now. There are many women in northern California who would like to thank Viclr.i Haag, for what she has done for us and what she tried to do again this year. MELOOYE 'ALlCEA 168. District 56 Placerville, CA Support women's MX We were informed yesterday by a nice, but justifiably bitter. letter from promoter Vicki Haag, that this year's Women's Nationals were cancelled due to a lack of entranu and sponsors. It is easy for thOle who have raced at the fme events for the past three years to understand Vicki's dis· . appointment. She has wor....ed 10 hard to get apon· IOrs and has achieved exposure for the serious female motocrouen on ABC Wuu WOTId of Sports (where we understand the viewer rati~ were very high) as well as other media. I am cenain that the other racen, their families and their apoDlOt'S will always be grateful as we .are for the efforu of Vicki Haag, Rick Haag, and Butch and Peggy Lee and others who have done 10 much for the girls who race. I can only hope that the factories, aftermarket accessory companies and motocrou media will pick up the torch and provide a national championship race or series of races to provied recognition for the dedication and competitive spirit of the serious girl racen. They are no Iesa dedicated than any factory team star and neither aaIr. nor p any favors to the men they race against every week throughout ~ My hat is off to Koolr.ie III and copilot John for their many combined years of service and dedication to a sport that could soon fade away unless more of us get off our duffs and put forth the effort needed to keep it alive. Let the paw-print·signed letter in the Sept. 2 issue of Cycle News stand out as a reminder to all of us that we have to fight if we intend to maintain reasonable use of public lands, and that part of the fight IOmetimes involves digging deep in support of those who carry on the legal battles. Having spent many a sleepless night wondering where the dollars would come from to pay for land use issue legal fees, I now find it easy to sacra· fice things I once fdt were important 10 that I have money to contribute to those who also carry on the fight. Becoming an AMA Legislative Supporter was easy for me because of their government relations effom to help protect the right of all Americans to ride free. District 51's recent effort to keep the desert open for public use by filing a law suit has consumed over $100,000, and they haven't even had their day in court yet. They need our fmancial support more than ever if they are to carry on the fight 10, I have become a Desert Defender by contributing to the 0-57 LegaJ Defense Fund, 1808 Lave Ave., Long Beach, CA 90815. How about you? The AMA, 0-57. the National OutdOOr Coalition, and the Phantom Duck, are aJl fighting for the same goals, the right of the people to continue to use the public lands. If we all work together and dig deep, perhaps our combined efforu will assure future opportunities for the Koolr.ies of America to enjoy lOme of the same experiences we have had in past years. Do your part today if you want to ride free tomorrow. LOUIS H. McKEY Phantom Duck of the Desert 7896 Kempster Ave. Fontana, CA 92555 P.S. A hearing on the Phantom Duck case has been scheduled for Oct. 5, 1981 in the courtroom of Federal Judge Matt Byrne in Los Angeles, and trial is set of Oct. 20. The outcome of this case will be a determining factor in settlement of five conaoIidated law suiu against the BLM Descrt Plan filed by the AMA, 0-57, County of Inyo, California Mining Association, National Outdoor Coalition, and the California Native Plant Society.
