- taking this upon myself to try to get some corrections made on the race programs. I have spent several thousand dollars in the past years supporting AMA race events, but if corrections are not made. I'll not be back with support next year. 1 would like to have input from all fans over the nation who are as disgusted as I am. I would like that input to be in the form of letters or telegrams, and I am personally going to take those to the' AMA Board of Trustees to try to get some corrections made. Please let me have aU response as soon as possible, for changes must be made quickly to save the Grand National Champioship circuit. 00 C') WIST America's weekly motorcycle newspaper JACK SISEMORE 4341 Canyon Dr. Amarillo, TX 79110 Sharon ClaytoD. Many people spent many dollars and valuable time traveling to the Pasadena Motorcycle Club Lights-On Enduro August I, 1981 to support a sport they love, not by riding, but by working. Many of these, like Ed Butler, made arrangements in advance with PMC only to be told on race day, "We don't need you." Others, like Don Merritt, a contending District 37 "A" Senior, did work and didn't even receive a thank you. In fact, Merritt was informed by PMC aftn the race that they, PMC, were not going to tum his name in for District points because he didn't help enough. All Merritt did was organize four other experienced enduro racer/ riders to completely man one check, made available a four-wheel drive vehicle (at PMC's request), made arrangements for someone's personal radio to be at his check (which was constantly in contact with IRRC), and provided the clock which was used at our check. Further, Merritt's check crew provided the clock used at Larry Woodruffs check. Me.rritt was not able to help ribbon or strip the course because his new Husky was in the shop for transmission repairs. However. Roger jasperson of PMC was informed of this by Merritt, by Garry Dokter, a former PMC member. and by myself. three days prior to the race. jasperson still requested that we come to the event and help out by running a check. It is my opinion that everyone wbo rode the Lights-On Enduro owes special thanks to Tracy Walters. one of District 37's premier riders and certainly one of the nicest guys you will ever meet. and to Larry Woodruff. These two guys did far more than their share, as I am sure others did. Without the Tracy Walters'. the Larry Woodruffs and the Don Merritts there would have been no enduro. In fact. it is this writer's opinion that the PMC. on their own. couldn't organize a weenyroast and because of their lack of class and appreciation. do not deserve to be mentioned in the same breath as the rest of the dedicated and fine clubs in District 37. RANDY LANGLEY Member. United Enduro Association P.S. My personal thanks to everyone at Check F and to the riders- of the Lights-On Enduro. It was my pleasure to support a sport I love. Please chip in and work an event when you can. Without volunteer help. enduro riding might go the way of the dinosaur. Don't let my experience with PMC discourage you - thne are those who care. Good four-legged advice My father Kookie rode the desert with John for 13 years. I would like to continue riding as long as he did, and to insure that future generations will be able to enjoy t~ friendship and competition of desert racing. To guarantee our right to ride we must stick together and support District 37's Legal Defense Fund. District 37 is now engaged in a very important court fight, and it has depleted our fund. I know we have already given to the Duck Fund, M.O.R.E. and CORVA, but the battle isn't over. We still have to dig a little deeper to win this one. It takes bucks. Please send what you can to D-37 Legal Defense Fund, 1808 Lave Ave., Long Beach, CA 90815. So we may all continued to ride and enjoy our desert. Three months ago I bought my Maico 490 Mega II for $2500. It·s a great bike; however, now my local dealer is selling the same bike for $-1950. He tells me that Maico is having a sale and I just missed out. Now people can buy a new Maico for less than I would sell my used one. Whatever happened to European quality holding its value? A Maico Sale is really more like a Maico Shaft job. My next bike will definitely be of japanese orgin. They may not be the best. but at least they're honest. JOHN LAMB Sacramento, CA More on Lawson I just wanted to clear up a couple of mistakes. Glenn Billings' stats are OK, but he misunderstood what he heard at Laguna Seca, which was also wrong. Roxy Rockwood said that Eddie Lawson had won eight straight races in 1981, four heat races and four main events. That's incorrect - Eddie lost his heat race at Daytona. So it's seven in 1980-81 mains, and seven in 1981 heats and mains. I just wanted to clear up what Billings heard on the loudspeaker at Laguna. CHUCK LONG Eddie's grandpa Ontario. CA Sponsor disgusted I would like to hear from all the fans on the Grand National Championship circuit who are put out with the way it is taking hours for the AMA officials to make a decision as to whether we are or are not going to have a race on race day. I have had two phone conversations with Lin Kuchler. a personal conversation with Bill Boyce, and no one seems to know what's going on. In visitations with all the riders 1 sponsor and several of the better-known mechanics. and tIlDen. they. too. are dilJausted, 1 am ATV News • Issue number two!
