In the Expen division it was Kern Sponcycle's Dan Smith and Pro Circuit's Dan Ashcraft, both on Huskys, trying to hit the trail frrst. A fierce battle began as they swapped places numerous times on the back section of the course. Finally Smith pulled away, and Ashcraft picked up a flat rear tire. At the finish of the first loop it was Dan Smith with a one minute lead over second place Howard McCasland followed by Up·Tite Husky rider Chuck Miller, Bill Saltzman and Mike Mulconery (Hus). First Amateur through was Muff. On the last lap the guys were in for a treat: it staned raining, complete with lightning and thunder. Smith was making his own thunder as he finished with a minute lead over second place McCasland. First Veteran was Bill Saltzman naturally. Third Open Expert was Mike Mulconery. Then Muff again for first Amateur. Afterward Smith comment· ed, "There were mud puddles on the course the last lap. " Dean Criske got the Novice win. ClO 0') Sunday • Den A8hcn1ft poated three wins - two In the 250cc Experts. one In the Open Expel1ll - at the D-37 Duel EuroScrama. - Ashcraft takes three at D·37 Dual EuroScrams By Norm Johnson LUCERNE VALLEY, CA, AUG. 15·16 Anderson Dry Lake was the site of the Desen Rats Dual European Scrambles, and if you arrived Friday night it was raining; a wel· come sight in the middle of August. Word of the day was stay on course. For those who wandered more than 50 feet off the course (and there were many) it was disqualification time. Saturday 40 First race of the day were the Trail· bikes (two riders). It was Bobby Charters taking the win. Next up were the gals on the A course, with the Seniors on the B side. At the bomb it was Jolene Payne (White Knuckle M.C.) with the lead. At the finish Payne had a three minute lead over second place June Elias with Lomi Vincent third. First Novice hODOn went to Vera Chaners. Around the fmt loop on the Senior side, it was Gary Chaners (Yam) with a commanding lead. Second bike ~ was Ron Bebo (Yam), followed by Dick Pll5tJna (C-A), AI Guzman (Suz) and Morris Norman (Hus). During the morning Chaners crashed practicing the stan and destroyed hi5 bike. So he borrowed Guy Gowdy's bike, a Yamaha, where Chaners normally rides a Suzuki. It must have agreed with him because he finished with over a minute lead over second place Morris Norman. Third rider in and first 250cc bike was Ron Bebo followed by Dick Postma and first Amateur Ron Hetherington. At noon the 0-175cc Amateur/Ex· perts left the line on the B course with the Beginner/Novices on the A track. It was Bill Mattox (Montclair Yam) leading at the bomb. Around the first loop it was Mattox, but he'd picked up a flat tire and pulled off the course. Coming in for the checkers was Tom Elias (Yam) with Oren Beck (Yam) second and Guy Gowdy (Yam) third and first Amateur. Leading the Novices home was a very fasl Rich Tieban (Yam) with about a 20 second lead over number two rider Sean '1unior Buckeroo" Johnson (Suz). In for third was Shelby DeCorova. When the always fast and furious 250cc Amateur/Experu left the line, it was Montclair Yamaha's Cliff Thomas and Pro Circuit's Dan Ashcraft (Hus) out in front. Around the first loop it was Thomas first and then Ashcraft and Jesse's Cycle's Criss Crandall (KTM). Crandall wheelied for the folks, but looped out. He remounted and never lost his third place spot. Next through was first Amateur Ted Hunnicut. At tbe finish it was Dan Ashcraft in with the win. Thomas' front brake cable got sruck and sent him over the bars, but he was unhurt. Second rider was Crandall with Howard McCasland (KTM) in for third. First Amateur and fourth overall was Randy Jones. First Veteran was Jim Bringhurst with Monte Lee second. On the Novice side it was 1212 for first with Steve Knapp second. First Novice Veteran was Cleyon Loonsfoot. Last races of the day were the big The courses were reversed the next day and it was Jolene Payne taking the win again in the Women's division with June Elias and Lorni Vincent following. The Seniors were off with Nate Sciacqua (Yam) getting the stan. Around the flISt loop it was Sciacqua in the lead by a long ways. followed by 1175, Morris Norman, Gary Chaners, Ron Bebo and fIrst Amateur Larry Amick. In for the money first wasz Sciacqua with Morris Norman, who by the way is going to Italy for ISDE, getting second. Third rider in was Al Guzman, tbe first 250cc bike. Chaners got a flat and cruised in last. Fourth bike in was Dick Postma. First C bike honors went to Jim "Duke" Harris. Next out were the 0-175 Amateur/ Experts and Beginner/Novices. Bill Mattox's rear tire stayed full of air this time, and he went on for the win with Paul Palmer second and Tom Elias third. On the Novice course it was Rich Tieban again and really smoking, to take the win with Sean Johnson second I again with a flat rear tire. Third rider in was Steve Klien. The 250cc Amateur/Expens got underway the second time with Dan Ashcraft out front with Cliff Thomas on hi5 tail. Around the first loop it was Ashcraft with a 50 second lead over Tbomas. Then Jeff Kaplan came through followed by fllSt Amateur Ted HUJlDicut. On the second loop, Thomas lost a chain, and Ashcraft was still in the lead. Criss Crandall staned moving up and put the move on Kaplan. At the checkers it was Ashcraft with a minute and a half lead over second place Crandall. In for third was Kaplan. First Amateur was Hunnicut. It was Ashcraft again getting the lead at the stan of the Open Amateur/ Expen division. On the first loop it was Ashcraft, Chuck Miller and Dan Smith. This was a race not to be upon the finish eight riders from third on down were disqualifted (the!f>O foot off course rule). Ashcraft got the win with Dan Smith second. It's too bad that so many have to suffer for the actions of a few in past races. Word has it that there were 40 + disqualifications over the weekend. The district steward must have his hands fuJI. The weather was great due to the rainy weather all weekend. The entries ran around 250, give or take a bunch... •
