Copyright· Thanks from Damian A big thank you to all those who joined us in Sequoia on the Aug. 1 weekend to rebuild the lower Beach Trail in the Sequoia National Forest. Special thanks to Forest Service memo btrs Debbie Goff, Brian Spence and Recreational Officer Mike Mendoza. who led this second team effort to completion. The FS asked for 20 volunteers. Along with the five riders coming down the Beach Trail. we..ended up with 52 volunteers! Unlike the Fourth of July effort. there was no easy access to the work area. All wheelbarrows. culverts. tools and Gabiens had to be transported 1.7 miles up a trail that was rougher than a cobb. Many thanks to Hurley Wilvert, who drug the Gabien (a chain-link enclosure. for the roclt bridge) all the way up to the work site on his KLX 250 torquer. Also to Alan Benson and friend. who did the same with a wheelbarrow on the back of his IT 400. There were many other similar feats of transportation too numerous to mention. Most succeeded. We apologize for the refreshments being 1.7 miles away and will do. better next time. Although not adverttsed as such. this effort was a tough one. and there will be others in the future that will be tougher (Rattlesnake. Dutch John. etc.) and some easier (Granite Knob Rebuild on Sept. 6). Scheduled as a 9·4 p.m. workday. this job was completed in just under three hours. In this writer'a opinion. Sequoia National Forest offers the finest forest riding area in the west. after that of Washington State. Eastern woods (not mountain) riders. midwestern. and California desert riders are repeatedly amazed when they fint see the area. with comments such as "can we reaUy ride here?" "We didn't know California had anything like this ... ," The Forest Service has made it clear that we would lose these trails if they were not maintained and repaired. Not because of the group that has outlived its usefulness (spelled Sierra Club). other environmental groups. or trail riders use. But because the FS simply doesn't have the manpower (or $) to maintain them. In the last two "Volunteer Days" the sheer numbers. enthusiasm. and work· completed. have made it clear that recreational trail riden are willing to maintain their trails - as well as ride them. Although Green Stickie funding, even though it is a state fund. is available to build new trails in Sequoia and (Federal) lands, it is at present not available where most needed - to rebuild and maintain e:JCisting trails. Mter getting our Green Stickie monies ripped off in the all-to-recent past, most of us want to see it tightly controlled now. and for ORV use onlyl There is perhaps no better or more important use for it than rebuilding and maintaining Sequoia ORV trails. There are specific FS plans in the works for a large trail network of new loop trails in Sequoia. to counteract the travesty of the Golden Trout Wilderness brought in by politics and "Eastern think" minds. Repairing and rebuilding' the existing trail network by volunteer effort will get us there. However. in conjunction with Green Stickie monies. we'd get there a lot faster. The FS has repeatedly asked for this funding from the state. and been denied. It looks like it's up to us. the enthusiasts and users. to apply political pressure to obtain . th!s funding. It's our money. SequoIa IS' OUT forest. as much as anybody else·s. As a Califoniia rider. a recreational trail rider, or any other state ORV user, what do you think? And. If you're like me, you were planning to send money but for some reason you put it off. Well, the time has come to send that check! The Motocross and Trophee des Nations events will be held in just a few weeks, and without support from people like you and me, we won't be able to show the world how good our riders are. Also, remember that we may lose our U.S. Grand Prix events because of our lack of participation, and this could be a real loss. Send what you can to American Motocross Team. c/o AMA. P.O. Box 141.
