At the Aug. 9 Finnish GP at Imatra, Lucchinelli beat second placer - and sole challenger to the title - Suzuki-mounted Randy Mamola by a full 20 seconds after Mamola was forced to recover from a very poor start. Reigning World Champ Kenny Roberts placed only seventh after the Yamaha's power valve failed only two lape from the end. Teammate Barry Sheene retired, also with power valve failure, at the halfway point in the race as he and Roberts battled for second place. Lucchinelli's winning time was 48:05.7, totally dominating the field ahead of a close three·way race for second place. Second went to Mamola (48:25.2). but Kawasaki's Korit Ballington (48:25.5) and Suzuki rider Jack Middleburg (48:25.7) followed within one-half secondl Suzuki's Graeme Crosby finished fifth with a 48:S9.4 time. In the points standings, Lucchinelli holds a nine-point lead over Mamola, lOS to 94. With 15 points awarded for a GP win, Lucchinelli would have to fare poorly at the Aug. 16 Andentorp, Sweden series finale while Mamola placed third or better for Randy to take the title. Roberts is out of contention with 74 points. a seven-point third over Sheene's 67. Crosby holds fifth with 62. In 250cc GP action, Kawasaki's Anton Mang continued to dominate the series with yet another victory. Rich Schlachter retired on the last lap when his Yamaha ran out of gas. Schlachter was running fifth at the time; he's ninth in the points standings. Top privateer in the AMA 500cc National Championship MX Series Alan King crashed at the Washougal National and suffered a severely dislocated wrist. Alan will be out of action for at least two months, according to Maico's Rich Schuenemann, so some cards and letters would definitely help ease the pain of having to miss the final 500cc race at Carlsbad and the Trans-USA MX Series.
