·~ -O""""••'1' Clark on prowl at Country Roads Hare Scramble By Usa Milcich HUNTSVILLE, TX,JULY 12 Bob Clark rode in the Expert class in hot pursuit of Guy Burkhan for the overall trophy at the Country Roads Hare Scramble, put on by the Trail Riders of HOWIton. Guy is not one to give up easily, though, and rode well ahead and almost out of Bob's sight for the first four laps. Bob's adrenalin got going and so did his throttle as he was gaining on a disappearing Burkhart when in reality Burkhan was gone, totally, out of the race. He blew one of his Husky's shocks and had to call it quits for the day. Clark took over for the remainder of the 1l-2 hours as Randy Burleson trailed behind him. During the first four laps of the 4 ~ mile course, Clark fell 10 times, and on lap five he was quoted as saying, "By then I knew the course and really started 10 ride." He planned on making one pit stop but was forced to SlOp a second time to put the gas reservoir back on his shock because the clamp broke. Burleson was not close enough, however, to rattle Clark into making one mistake as he crossed the finish line snagging overall for the day. Tina Cotton led the Novice Women off the starting line after a live standbeside-your-bike start. Despite the watered down course and creek beds, she kept the lead throughout the hourlong race on her KDX175. Credit is also due to Brenda Lewis and Judy Winterbum who held second and third till a muck hole stalled their engines and made them lose quite a bit of time, placing them in third and fourth. Second went to another Kawasaki rider, Lisa Milcich, who missed her start by 10 minutes. Bryan Winterbum took third behind Kevin Mazurkiewicz and winner Thomas Tysl in the 250cc Intermediate class. Winterbum put on quite a show by vaulting himself several feet off a sand jump near the pits. He raised his hand and waved to the crowd while flying by. Slade Putman ran an impressive race in the Open Intermediate class on his 450 Husky. While opening it up on a straightaway after his first pit stop of fueling for body and bike, he felt liquid splashing on his thighs. Quickly looking down, he saw his gas cap bouncing around between his legs, grabbed the cap and replaced it. He remarked that at first he thought he could handle the burning sensation, but after a few seconds realized that was not going to be a wise decision. The pits were two miles away so he opted for a creek up ahead, threw the bike on its kick stand and fell down into the water where he imitated a pig taking a mud bath. Before second place rider Greg Wilmeth had time to catch up to him, Putman leaped back onto his bike and hauled off. Yours truly regretfully takes the credit for not replacing his gas cap securely. Putman also wanted to show Bryan Winterburn that he, too, could amaze the crowd with his stunts. Putman passed a rider while doing a seemingly "no-way-to-save-it" flying W off a jump and went on to claim first in his class. Jack Jones was a contender for third till his needle jet stuck and the bike quit in a wooded back section. He cranked in vain, wallted back to the pits and was pronounced DNF on arrival; sorry Jackl co-Colo~ Y_ _9· Mud claimed several riders throughout the day. One was Wanda Nesloney, who was riding with the Intermediate Women for the first time after trophying out of the Novice class. She was in the running till she fell in a three-foot deep creek which took the life of her motorcycle and forced her to quit for the day. ''I'm not mad at the bike; it was my own fault," she said. One racer mentioned that he saw a riderless bike standing upright hy itself in a mud-filled trench. At the end of the day, reports were that it was still proudly standing there. Results VOUTH: 1. The second moto saw Weak in second and Boston in the lead after the first set of whoops. It looked as though Weak had a better position sooner in this moto, but four laps later, he was still trailing. The long, high speed uphill was the spot Weak picked to go outside and take first place. While Weak was heading for the checkered flag, Dan Newell was showing how to endo a bike over a jump into a fence, get up and finish third. In the first moto of the 250cc Pro class, Boston would not be denied victory. Greg Theiss, running second, could not close on him. The second moto belonged to Theiss. He took the lead on the first lap and stayed there. Boston ftnished second in this moto and overall. • KXUnl-Trak HEADQUARTERS WE HAVE YOUR PARTS' Same Day UPS Shipping To Western States CALL (714) 884-6481 We Have The Latest Trick Parts & Tuning Know-How For All Models IlINCON KAWASAKI SOD 263 Souc.h E St. BcrDanliDo.
