Carr sweeps Loci NatlonalST qualifier By Ann Carr Lom, CA,JULY 25 Cbm Carr from Manteca prepped to defend his six 1980 National Tf and shon track titles in Michigan in August by winning every heat and main he rode tonight at Lodi Cycle Bowl's AMA National Qualifier. Improving track conditions plus a nice spectator crowd and some really pretty brass provided for some excellent competition in most classes of an AMA-type Amateur program which considers every racer an upen at qualifying time. Numbers were slight in both portions of the lOOcc division but Chris Carr and Robbie Blagg battled clORly for several laps of each race before Chris' familianty with the Lodi groove moved him into victory lane in the lOOcc Schoolboy and 100cc Amateur classes. 36 Salinas Valley Plumbing's Tommy Carriger ran away with both the 85cc Stock and Modified races for 7-11 year·olds. Fresno's Billy McKinney placed second in the first race while Bodie inched into the second Modified spot. Macedo Construction's Mike Macedo wailed in 85cc Stock 12·14 and then placed second behind Chris Carr's Suzuki in tbe Modified ponion. An earlier charge by Mike through the pack would have gotten Chris in this one. Robbie Blagg followed his 250cc win of Friday night with a nice win over Wayne Cummings in the 200cc event after chasing Wayne in the heat. Old time upernJim Mahoney, Lynn George and Danny Malfani put on their usual good show as they exchanged leads in the heat and main but the above order stood at :!I6Occ trophy time. Steve Mitchell or Steve Hill should have won the 250cc fray, but an uncalled for charge into turn three by a rider allegedly admitting to no brakes took out both Steve's and forced at least seven racen to go wide to miss the mess. Chris Carr emerged from turn four in second place after getting off the 1ine II tho A nice drive into turn one got Chris by Jon Eichel· baugh for his founh win of the night. Jon remained second ahead of Danny McDonnell and Brian Sansing. Steve Hill continued his string of bad luck (his 125 broke in addition to the 250cc getoff) in the 500cc main as he led off the line only to have his motor die in turn four. Aaron Hill moved to the front at that point and put distance on the rest. Brian Dennis and Barry Olsen took the other victory circle spots. Good luck to thoee riden who qualified and plan to carry the western banners in Michiganl Results SOH 1. M8nWIillSuz/; 2. ~ W_IHonI. lIli 7-11: 1. Bodie SI'lIphn lSuz/; 2. M &. D high point awards on Aug. :!II will halt Friday competition in the area until Labor Day weekend when Newman will kick off the traditional closeout of summer racing. Chris and David took the. lion's share of tonight's money as Chris jump· ed to the front of the 250cc go in tum two of lap one and led the rest of the way w~le David inched up clORr at the end but couldn't catch the Jorgy's/ ND/Boss-framed/Mike's Pipes CanAm. David retained second over Joe Knight whose third place was good enough for the series cash next week. BoYles returned in the 500cc main to nail Dana Perri and Aaron Hill for th~ win and series payoff. In other Amateur competition, Don Clasby edged Eric Lewis for the 500cc Novice win while Steve Mitchell led Barry Olsen to the flag in a wire-to· wire 500cc Junior main win. Robbie Blagg tripped down from Central Point, OR and put his 200cc Honda through its paces to edge local Rick Frish in the 250cc Novice main. Danny McDonnell, meanwhile, car· ried his winning ways in the Novice class right into the Junior ranlts and nabbed his first Junior win over Larry Barkhouse and Roben Pool. Woody Ragen continued his domination of the lightweight class by topping the 125cc group for the founh Friday in a row. In Mini action, Winkie Freitas doubled for the second week as he outlasted the charge of Mike Macedo's Yamaha in the 85cc upen go, then ran away from the pack in the 100cc main. Winkie and his Dave Bird·DeI Callsen equipment appear an easy Mini numher one winner this season unless misfortunes occur. In other action. Jeff Bingham took his Jorgy's Suzuki to its second straight 85cc combined win while Jon Noyer captured the Novice brass. Shon trackin' continues at Lodi on Saturday nights through August 22. Manning double trouble at Gold Cup finale By Clay and Suanne Ught Photo by Richard Earle McCLEARY. WA,JULY26 Over 400 riders were on hand for the final round of the Yamaha Perpetual Gold Cup Series held at the excellently prepared Thunton County ORV Park facilities. Local Washington rider Robb Manning (Bellevue Suz) was the victor of the day as the took the overall in both the 125 and 250cc Pro classes with his consistent riding while John Christian (Yam) topped the Open Pro cIasa, trading moto wins with team Maico rider Eric Eaton. The dust and high heat took its toll on many riden, and some overall scores were very inconsistent in Amateur action. The day started off with two l25cc Pro qualifien; 1:!1 from each would make it to the main. Qualifier number one was on the line and had some heavy competition. Stacy Thornton (Bellevue Suz) pulled the holeshot with Don Gores (Olympic Yam) and Jimmy Anderson (Yam suppon) right on his rear fender. The real action was for third as Jeff Cropper (Gresham Suz), Cory Klaudt (Yam), Danny Diesso (Burien Suz) and Mike Lanon (Yam) were banging ban as if going for the final transfer spot. Thornton was long gone while Andenon clipped Gores sending bod1 down, while And£non remounted quickly for second and Klaudt third. Qualifier two had Phil Lanon (Yam suppon) take immediate control fol· lowed by Eric Hall (LOP Yam). Robb Manning (Suz) and Gary Kuest (Airway Heights Yam) in cloee tag. As the race went on, Larson crashed let· ting Manning by for the win while Lanon got going in time to hold Hall at bay. Ted Holt (RPM Suz) was third and Kuest founh. A last chance race was the consolation, from which four riders would. make the main. Billy Baumgardner (Suz.) took the scratch with Mark Studder (Yam) and Jeff Moore (Suz) behind. Mike Lanon (Yam), Phil's brother, came from out of nowhere and by lap three took the lead from Baumgardner for the win. Tom Mori· arity (Yam) took third and Jeff Moore fourth for the final transfer spot. The stage was set for the main. Jim Anderson took off into the lead with Cory Klaudt, Doug Taylor (Suz). Phil . Lanon, Robb Manning, Gary Kuest and Brett Tremblay (Suz) holding down the top spots. Anderson went off the track, putting Klaudt into the lead. Lanon seemed to be putting on a charge until Fng out with a FN on lap three putong Manning up a notch. Klaudt had a big lead over Manning who also had a large lead over a Taylor/ Kuest/Tremblay/Andenon dice that was developing behind. Kuest got by Taylor and went after Manning, -but the margin was too.large to cloee the gap. Andenon also got by Taylor and closed in on Kuest, but there was only one lap to go by this time. and Ander· son was trying everything in the book to get by. At the flag, it was a stylish Klaudt winning over Manning, Kuest, Andenon, Tremblay, Taylor and Stacy Thornton who worked from last to eighth, which was the fmal pay spot permoto. Moto two had Tremblay take the lead on his Full Floater with Anderson hold· ing down second, Gores third, Thornton founh and Taylor ftfth, Manning, Hall and Klaudt were all buried in the pack; the dust was so bad that riden were dropping like flies trying to guess where the cornen were! Tremblay was riding in a manner that topped any other of his Gold Cup perfonnances, and Thornton moved into third be· hind Anderson. Then it happened. Series leader Anderson went out with a seized motor putting Thornton into second while Manning was one of the lucky ones; he knew the track well enoughtonaviga~himRHtMough the choking dust which was so thick that your reponers could barely see the Thornton/Manning dice that went down to the wire. Tremblay took the win with Thornton second, Manning third, Gores fourth and Kuest ftfth. The 250cc Pros had only 28 riden so everyone made it to the main. Robb Manning was at it again as he blitzed to the front followed by Anderson and Ron Sun (Hon suppon). Anderson took over the lead on the triples, with Man· ning, Sun, Kevin Jansen (Kaw suppon), Cory Klaudt and Warren Hickman (Yam) in close fonnation, waiting for mistakes on the one line track. Both Eric Eaton (Mai) and Phil Lanon (Yam) were caught in the traffic, but they were quick at joini!}g the front· runnen. At the halfway point. both Manning and Sun got by Andencm while Lanon worked into founh. Klaudt moved by
