Northern California-Northern Nevada-Oregon-Washington-Idaho-Utah-Alaska-' had a jet motor strapped to his back side. Wargo was in no fl?Sition to lose another overall title wIth mechanical problems as Wargo blazed to two un' contested fint place rides followed by Rick Ryan and Jack Barton. Rich Dezog rode his Maico to top honon in the Open Pro class with some very impressive moves to score a big win. In the fint moto, all the bikes crowded into the fint tum with Jerome Heiberger taking the lead with Dezog acting as Heiberger's shadow and John Scruggs racing into the third spot. At the finish, it was the same order with Heiberger taking the checkered flag, Dezog in second and Scruggs taking third. The second moto saw the word consistent put to its meaning as Dezog ran smooth as silk and passed fint moto winner Heiberger who had engine problems to take an easy victory and enough points to take the overall title followed by John Scruggs and Doug Noell. Day, Chandler tame Experts at BoladoST By Merty Scott HOLLISTER, CA, JULY 25 Keith Day, just off his thirdplace finish in the Novice road race at Laguna Seca the weekend before, continued his domination of the 250cc Experta with a wire-to· wire win, and Doug Chandler made it a sweep for the Salinas Kawasaki-Suzuki team by taking the 500cc Expen main event on a Suzuki DR500 at the Bolado Park cushion short track tonight. Despite the National Qualifier being run the same night at Lodi, most of the top District Experts were on hand in the Mini cia•. With the Nationals being run in Michigan, it just isn't worth the trip. Everyone around District 56 knows there is no question who would have taken the top honon at the Nationals in the Mini classes as Winkie Freitas continued to dominate, stnolr.· ing the 85cc Experta on the Dave Birdtuned CRSO Honda and looking like he was going to make it another one of his famous double wins with a big hole· shot in the lOOcc main. But the dis· gusted Winkie pulled in with engine troubles before he could finish the fint lap in the 1005. Steve Mayfield took second in the 85cc class and third went to Danny Cahoon in his first Expert ride, beating some good, established Experts. Craig Johnson took over the lead in the 100s after Freitas pulled out, and it was no contest as he took the win over John Nunez who made a seventh lap pass of Dean Vincelet who flOished third. Eric Green took a wire-to-wire win in the 250cc Novice main event over the hard charging Todd Beecher. ORANGE COUNTY CYCLE 00 (j) ORANGE COUNTY'S LARGEST DIRT BIKE HEADQUARTERS Once again, it was P.J. Sanchez blowing away the 250cc Junior field, winning by half a lap. The Experts better be aware, and the Junion can breath a sigh of relief because P.J.'s now an Expert. Jim Wallace was second with a fine ride. After the 250cc Expert heats, everyone was looking forward to the big match-up between Keith Day and Billy Scott (both were big winners in their beats). It never materialized; Dan· ny Moore made sure of it by taking the holeshot followed by Day and Scott. Day made the pass for the lead going into tum three and was home free. The race for second was a battle throughout with Moore holding off Scott every lap. Scott really went for it on the final lap, but it was to no avail; Moore held him off at the checkered. A fmt-lap crash brought out the red in the 500cc Novice main. When they got started, the win went to Kurt Schiffner over Franlr. Randazzo, the early leader who made one mistake going wide in four which cost him the lead. He recovered for a well ridden second. Mark LaCossa, following in cousin Don Castro's footsteps. took the 500cc Junior win on his 560 Bultaco over Lee Yetter. The 500cc Experta was a battle be· tween Doug Chandler, Day and Moore. Day was off on the green over Chandler and Moore. Doug and Keith were really going for it up front with Danny right there waiting for a mistake. Chanlder was able to work the Suzuki DR500 past Day on lap seven. Day went for it too much on the white flag lap and went down. The win went to Chandler and the Salinas KawasakiSuzuki DR500 over Moore's Honda. A sad note was the loss of a good friend earlier in the day as Geoff Lowe of Salinas was killed at a Pro race in Minnesota. Our deepest sympathies go to Geoffs family. Anybody who knew Geoff knows there was nobody with more desire and heart to race. We all will misa Geoff for he was a friend to everyone, and the memories of the good tiems we had will stick forever. So, Godspeed Geoff. and we know your spirit will be with us throughout. Results PEE WEE: I. J.-nv Chioum CSuzI. E EX: I. _ _ IHonl; 2. 5 _ ~ lVom); 3. Don Cohoon CVoml. ~IOO JR: I.
