CA 900581213) 141·5113 By Carol Campbell CORONA, CA,JULY 24 The usually good turnout at Corona Raceway was even better wlJ.en the word got out that Ron Crandall's now famous "stadium whoops" would have some drastic changes made to them. - It was the 250cc Intermediates who found out about the changes first. Kit Palmer (Hon) got off the line first with Jack Scott (Yam), David Neal (Hon) and Brandon Sneiderwine (Kaw) right behind. As the riders came into the whoops, the.re was a complete change in the first six positions, due to the huge waterhole right in the middle of the whoops. It was Sneiderwine taking over the lead with Neal running second. Scott dropped back to sixth place and Palmer sbpped to third place. Sneiderwine managed to keep Neal behind him, but not without a lot of opposition from Neal. Meanwlille, Scott was busy moving up through the pack. When the checkered flag came out it was Sneiderwine, Neal and Scott fmishing in the top three spots. The second moto found Neal with the lead, but Scott was breathing down his neck after getting by Mark Anderson (Yam) and Paul Schdller (Hon). Handlebar to handlebar, Neal and Scott went at it. Through the "stadium whoops" the two went side by side with Neal holding a slight edge over Scott. As the two hit the double whoops for the ftfth time, Neal missed a shift and Scott Orw by to take over the lead. Things were looking good for Scott as he staned to pull a slight lead over Neal, until they reached those "dreaded" whoops again_ As Scott staned over the second to last jump, he stalled in the mud, opening the door for Neal once more. It was Neal taking the overall win with a 2-1 score, Scott took home second place honors with a 5-2 finish and Sneiderwine rounded out the top three with a 1-4 score. The 250cc Pros were out in force, but the action was all at the front of the pack as Eric MacCracken (Yam) took the lead over Rex Staten (Suz) and Greg Zitterkopf (Yam). It wasn't long until Staten made his move on MacCraden, leaving MacCracken and Zitterkopf to battle over second place. While MacCracken and Zitterkopf were going at it tooth and nail, Staten was busy doing wheelies down the straightaways.
