As expected the Top Fuel bikes were the hit of the show, with RWIS Collins' remarkable recovery from a serious accident enabling him to ride much sooner than expected. Just as remarkable was the completely redesigned Honda with a new three-speed transmission and fuel injection designed by Russ himself. A qualifying time of 7.84 served notice that Russ and his Honda definitely means business. Terry Vance and his beautifully prepared Suzuki laid down a perfect Dragbiltel record breaking 7.!l9 on Saturday night. but was later plagued with transmission problems and was unable to back it up. The Top Fuel fmal had the crowd on its feet with Jim Bernard and the Yamaha sponsored by Vance &: Hines Racing and the R.E. Engineering Honda of Russ Collins sponsored by American Honda both creating the sounds and the eye watering fumes that are so addicting to drag race fans. The race belonged to Collins as he took the Sorcerer through the traps for a 7.94 clocking and a 189.49 mph top speed. Bernard posted an 8.!l9/ 164.8!l. Competition Eliminator paired up T.J-Jackson's Kawasaki with the Dave Dodge Yamaha. Jackson came home the winner even though Dodge ran three identical runs in a row of 9.!l6 and 15!l.!l% - a very rare example of consistency! Modified saw the cloeest racing of the day with Jeff Bryant winning in 10.!l%l1%7.%9 to Ed Malkiwicz's 10.!l5/ 1%7.11. Stock class was a big surprise to the fans but not to Roger McPhail as he went for the win on his record holding Experimental Stock Suzuki with a 10.%8-1!l0.4!l mph! It was no surprise to see Pee Wee Gleason in the finals putting his rapid 550 Yamaha Seca in the runner-up position. Capt. Q.ueq. the muter of the ET brackets and his faithful CBX, added -------- ----. -------- Clint Hardick won a tiebreaker over Marty Moates in the 250cc Pro class at the Continental Motasports Club's Carlsbad MX, finishingwith a 2-1 day. In the first moto David Gerig got the holeshot, with Hardick second. Jim Odie third. Moates founh and Gary Semics in fifth. Moates and Semics got by Odie on the uphill of the first lap. Gerig's rear brake was sticking. then releasing which acted in a catapulting motion and threw him all over the track. Hardick passed Gerig at the stan of the second lap to take over fint. Moates moved up to second. passing Gerig on the downhill. Moates then moved even with Hardick on the fifth lap to charge for the lead. while Semics passed Gerig on the downhill to take over third. Gerig held founh over Odie until his rear wheel shattered on the 10th lap and put him out of the race. Hardick and Moates diced for the lead until the 1!lth lap. where Moates passed Hardick on the ledge and held his lead to win the race. Hardick was second over Semics and Odie. In the second moto Hardick went untouched the entire race. He took an early lead with Moates second, Odie third and Gerig fourth. Gerig passed Odie on the backside of the second lap to take over third. Semics moved into fifth after coming out last in a pile-up at the stan. On the seventh lap Hardick had moved to a 21 second lead. Moates and Gerig were now battling furiously for second and Semics passed Odie for founh. Moates and Gerig traded second at least six times until the last lap, with Moates finishing second and Gerig third. Hardick finished with an eight second lead. and Semics was founh ahead of Odle. Friu Schlegel went uncontested with a 1-1 first overall in the 125cc Pro class. Joaquin Picazo got the holeshot with Roben Nolin, Mike Beier and Schlegelfullomng. Schlegelovenook both Beier and then Nolin on the uphill to take over second. On the second lap Schlegel got by Picazo for the lead. Beier moved into third ahead of Nolin and then passed Picazo for second at the stan of the sixth lap. Two laps later Nolin passed Picazo for third on the downhill. Schlegel finished with a 15' second lead over Beier. Nolin and Picazo. In the second moto Schlegel got the holeshot with Nolin second, Ray Tetberton third and Picazo fourth. Schlegel pulled away with a commanding lead while Nolin and Tetherton battled for second the entire .~t,.t"'libac
