JULY 24 The Handicap side of this evening's program could best be described as "unusual," with three of the northern California's • 22 top four failing to make their normal trand'en to the main. Number One Mike Faria's bike reany did something unusual. quitting in tum two on lap five of his semi while he was attempting to take Joe Ledoc for the win. costing him his transfer to the main. Eddie Ingels failed to trans· fer in his semi. as did Tom Ferris; both held off by the impressive rides of Pat Linn. Mike Delacy. and Ron McGill. Consequendy, the Handicap consolation could easily have been mistaken for the main event. Bob Holmes took the lead. with Marc Prince second and Buddy Robinson third. From the back of the pack Inaels and Faria gained on every lap. and Ingels took the lead in lap four. Holmes dropped to second. as Faria moved into ihird. and then to second on the next lap. The nmainder of the race was a side by side. batde for the win. which Ingels claimed by inches. Faria was second and Holmes took third. As the crowd recovered from that breathtaking exhibition. the gate went up on the Handicap mam. Pat Linn. who has amazed northern California in recent weeks with his riding. was in the lead. followed by Mike Delacy and Ron McGill. On lap two McGill dropped to futh as Duane Yarrow moved up from last place to third. On lap three Delacy. another nonherner who has really "turned it on" in the past few weeks. took the opponunity to move into the lead when Linn went wide in tum two. Delacy's lead increased in every tum as he took his first Handicap main win at Auburn this year. and made it look easy! In the Scratch main "Flyin' Mike" Faria. who had his string of five in a row broken by Alan "Crazy" Christian the week before got right back in the groove tonight, as he took his usual immediate lead out of the gate and managed to stay inside and hold off a much too close for camfon Dennis "Chao Chao" Robinson in a crowd thrilling exhibition. Robinson was second. Ingels third and Paul Orlandi founh. In the Division Two main, Steve Crawford. the hottest newcomer in the Nonh this season. took the lead on Ron Long's four·valve long stroke. which he had borrowed when his own bike gave up for the evening. Crawford literal1y led by a straightaway every lap to the finish. Dan Sweeton got past Jack Forseth for second on lap three. and that was the fmish. There was some "flying action" in the Division Three main. as Elmer McCleary claimed the lead for two laps. before going down in tum two along with Tim Cooney. About the same time. Cun Miller did somersaults with his bike in tum three. Miraculously McCleary and Miller recovered and finished the race. In the meantime. Tom Page moved into the lead for the win. Dave Fonts was second and Dominic Bottini took third. You just never know what to expect in D-51 In the Junior Division. John HOUlton.
