Unfortunately, in the practice session before the decision was made, three riders were injured, Steve EIr.lund, in a horrifying crash which snapped his bike in half, sustained a badly twisted neck and was badly shaken. ~n a separate incident Peter Hook and Scott Adams trashed their machines with Hook breaking his low~r left ieg while Adams was bruised and batteted. A week of rain 'left the track a soggy mess. Grooming began as soon as the sun came out on Saturday. The AMA suggested the track people blade off the top layer of mud and then wheelpack the surface. The track crew said It would take too long and opted to roll and wheel-pack the track which left the surface rutted and spongy. At 6 p.m. the program was called - over the protests of some riden. The Winston Pro Series point stand· ings were shuffied with KK Motorcycle Supply/Jack Sisemore sponsored Gary Scott padding his lead as Kidd moved into second. Scott leads Kidd by nine points - 125 to 116. With both FJdund and Springsteen on the sidelines, Goes moved his Harley-Davidson factory mount into third with 106 points while E1dund slipped back a notch, holding fourth at 105. Springsteen. witb 95 points, and Hank Scott, witb 95, are the only other riden still in the ball game with nine Nationals to run. Sunday'S track turned out to be in decent shape for both groove and cushion track riden despite a.slick spot or two and a couple of depressions which developed in the turns - most notably smack in the middle of the fast line coming off tum four.
