Viewria Smith, Advertising/Editorial AuiltaDI. Editorial Cbarles Morey, Managing Editor. Dale Brown, Editor. Mark Kariya. Editor, Ozone Advertising While reading Ron Pierce's article previewing the AFM Budweiser SixHour. I noted that he states twice the need for oxygen in the pits. Where I can definitely see Mr. Pierce's expenise in road racing, I didn't know that he was also a physiologist. Maybe Mr. Pierce could let us mow where he has been training, since most material I have read states that the application of oxygen is used when one of the following criteria is met: 1. To treat Hypoxemia (an oxygen level lower than the normal 80l00mmHg.) 2. To decrease the work of b ~ (which is usually a result of 11). ~. To decrease the work of the hean (as in a myocardial infarction, more commonly k.nown as a ''heart attack"). The only other reason one might need oxygen in a race as if they plan on sucking on an exhaust pipe and raising their carbon monoxide level too high. This is very popular with people trying to kill themselves in a closed garage with a motor running. It is more unfortunate that Mr. Pierce thinks oxygen is a wonder drug that will pick one up when one is hot and tired, but that is what comes from watching M. Welby and B. Casey too long.
