- Many of our detractors have said the trail riders never did two bits to maintain our trails. Just rode them to death. Let them be silent now. Sequoia Volunteer Day thanks Just a not~ to thank all th~ who turned a 9 a.m.-4 p.m. day into two hours, for thar work on r~building th~ Beach Trail in S~quoia National Fo~t. Th~ most-damag~d ~tion of this trail was closed and turned back to natur~. Not only don th~ newly-built 7/10tbs mile trail now roid~ on a hillsid~ to rninimiz~ futur~ damag~, but it off~rs . mor~ aoth~tic valu~ to th~ r~~~ational trail rid~r. It also givo us tWIC~ as much trail mil~ag~ as the area that was closed. Many groups and individuals have done volunteer work with the Forest Service in the Cannell Meadow District before over the past several years. But the 4th of July rider turnout was nothing less than historic, in terms of numbers, enthusiasm and roults. Out o.f 108 riders (and friends) who hastily Slgne'd up a day or two before "Volunteer Day," 101 actually left the "stan lineI" Because of the incredi ble turnout, the Forot Service and others were afraid that there would be m~ confusion, chaos and injurio. Instead t~e~e was excellent supervision, w~lI diVIded work groups, and a new trail that all can be proud of. Condolenco to. t~e only "near-injury," Dave KincaId, who suffered only a bruised foot, inste~d of a nail through it, thanks to his plastic boots. With the tremendous success of this effon, we hope that it is only the stan of a systematic volunteer trail rider maintenance program in the Cannell Meadow District and other Forot Service districts. The Forot Service has assured this rider that a complete :'loop trail" network is ready to be lffiplemented, to alleviate the chaotic and controversial "Gloden Trout" clos~~, and roulting dead-ends. But repaIr and S?":le rerouting of ba~ly damaged eXIsting trails has to be completed first. The sooner we get the existing trails up to snuff, the sooner the constantly-called-for "loop" network will happen. Though there was no real club effon at this event, there were many members from at least the following 12 clubs who donated their time, as follows: Checkpoints M.C., Chaparrals M.C., Barbenders Wot M.C., Conjo Trail Riders, East/Wot M.C. Pit Crew, Sea Kruzen, SoCaI M.C., Stumpjumpers M.C_, Tyred Wheels M.C., UEA, and the Vallejo M.C. Enough cannot be said of the Foro( Service ~n cooperation, supervision, and maxlffium qualiry with minimum personnel. It is no ~ret that their funds ~nd numbers ar~ severely shon, and mIght remain 50 for at least the next few years. A special thanks to Mike Mendoza, without wh~ extensive field and office work this project could not have happened, and to Tom Crimrnons, who authorized and led it to completion, Thanks also to Sue McElfroh, Brian Spence, Debbie Goff, and the five "emgergency helpers" who completed a fairy tale story. Plans now call for two yearly large group (60-80 volunteers) work days on the 4th of July and Labor Day weekend. One to two small group (2030 volunteers) events are planned, one on the first weekend in August, and the other tentative one on the first or ~ond weekend ofJune. There are two more "Volunteer Days" scheduled this year. On die Au~. I weekend ,will be a small group projeCt to repalT the Lower Beach Trail. On Sept. 6 (Labor Day weekend) will be a larger group effon to reroute and repair the Granite Knob Trail. . ~ause many of the existing trails In the Cannell Meadow District are not designed as motorcycle trails (and in fact were built by the CCC, circa 1933). there are cl~ taking place now, that would otherwise be unnecessary. The Granite Knob route is one such trail. With its reroute to a m~re acceptable area, like the justfinIShed upper Beach Trail, permanent, temporary, and seasonal closu~ will stan to fade. -1)tough there was perhaps not a who was not happy, excited, or Jubulant of this success, we would be eager to see clubs join the roster for future events, A lot of fun was had by all on the 4th. Our apologies to those few who got lost riding out to the trailhead. There will be markers up next time. The Fo~t Service will try to provide enou~h cold. punch for all (sorry guys, beer IS agatnst FS regs) at the next events. pe~n p~t Honda's ad in your July 1st issue regarding their inference that tbe ATCs that finished were the first three wheeler to do 50 is innacurate. Your (Cycle News) clarification that Honda's ATCs were the first production three-wheelers, as compared with Frank Danielson's !ri~~h side hack rig, to finish Baja IS stilI Incorrect. And Honda's ATCs were not the first production threewhee~ers to finish Baja (SCORE sanctioned or not). First, let's clarify the fact that Triumph (most all British, other European and Harley Davidson) motorcyclo were sold production with side cars. As I recall ~ McQueen! Ekins Triumph 'hack' three·wheeler was in.fact a modified production side car Unlt. That means, in either or both cases, that Danielson's 1970 Baja 1000 finish was indeed the first "thne· whreler" to finish a Baja race (NORRA sanctioned then). Secondly, according to Honda's own ad. thar ATC's only went to, "San F~bpe, approximately one half the full distance of the Baja 1000 course." Th.at means the Honda ATCs only fimshed half-a-thousand. In this case only about 375 milo, That took them "19 grueling hours" according to tbe ad. Thirdly, Frank Danielson's 1970 Baja 1000 finish covered about 900 milo and went all the way to La Paz ... not just down the road to San Felipe. And Danielson's effons required the "three-wheeler" to carry two riders, not just one, Lastly, therefore, Honda's advertisement should read as, "The first production Japanoe three-wheeler (not counting Japanoe cars that had one wheel fall off) to finish, panially or half, the Baja (SCORE) 1000." Congratulations can be in store for Honda's ATCs in Baja, but only as compared with. other All Terrain Vehicles... not motorcycle hacks. Now you've got the record straightl P.l.
