The course started out on jeep roads and had a timekeeper check at !I.6 miles. The next 18 mph section went into a rock garden and then onto a mile of rocky trail which had t~e. A riders hustling to zero the awoutmg check at 8.7 miles. This was folIowed by more rocks; on trails then meadows. then trails again which brought you to the third ch~k at 16.8. Again. one had to be domg some good riding t~ zero this ch~k..By this time. most nders were thinking that "Rocky" on the arrows was a description of the rest of the COUI'R, and not the supplier of the arrows. There was a reset at 17.1, and then the average was kicked up to 21.. Mil~ of jeep road through the ~c ~o Grande National Forest made n faIrly easy to zero check four at 44.0 miles. Check five at 48.4 was also easy to zero. This check took you into a reset and the gas stop at 44.0. The second half started out at 18 mph and took you onto the rocky trail that was used in the first half, just before the second check. The route chart showed the speed average being kicked up to 24 mph at 6!1.1, so you could go into this section hot and pouibly zero the check at the end of the rocky trail, right? Wrong, the check had been moved up near the beginning of the rocky trail. This caught a few of the A riden hot. Great move by the Boot HiIl Enduro Club. CO, JUNE %8 _ By Geoff Hamilton Photos by Skip McClure down, and switchbacks run at 24 mph. At the end was the tie-breaker and a reset. The remainder of Cathedral Trail was run at 18 mph. A rock slide on the trail caused a bottleneck of about !lO to 40 riders when the later riders went through. There was no way aroun~ this one and late riders had to wan about 10-15 minutes to get a chance to ride. But the club once again showed great enduro sense by placing the eighth check far enough past the bottleneck (about 10 miles) so that it could be zeroed by the riders that were on time going into the section. At about 94 miles, the trai1 reached the top of the l%,OOO-foot Bower's Peak (glad I wasn't on a 125). Quite a few of the riders experienced your basic Colorado summer afternoon hailstorm up there. Then it was through an observed check at about 96 miles. and what everybody was waiting for the infamous Colorado Boulevard. Eight miles of rocks. Many people were pleased, however. as this year we got to go down the hill. Running it uphiIl last year was. a bit much ~or ~uite a few of the nders.
